Default Model 64 thumb piece

Can I remove the thumb piece to make it easier to buff out scratches on my 64 or will some part inside fall loose? As you can tell, I have never taken a sideplate off any of my revolver. I always remember what my grandfather told me, only fools and jewelers take the backs off of watches. This was before battery watches I might add. Thanks, Tedog

Thumbs up

Yes removing the cylinder release (thumb piece) is as simple as removing the screw. No tricks. The side plate is a can of worms. I would suggest watching a video before trying this procedure, to see if you want to get into that. Once you have done it a few times You will be surprised how simple it is. But there are a few tricks.

Use a good hollow ground bit or driver that fits good. If not you will start getting buggered screws.

If you over tighten the screw on reassembly, you might loosen the screw stud in the bolt. It is just a threaded stud with a small staking punch to secure it.

Just be careful and don't make it gorilla tight when reinstalling.
