What is the most that you have taken apart and changed a S&W revolver ?

I was wondering because I have a M-28 that I have made into several different configurations over the years, and was wondering if there is any harm that can come from changing it so many times (because I haven’t seen any).

-The 28-2 started out as a standard 4” carry version, my dad wanted to hunt with it, so it needed a 6” barrel (a state requirement). So I traded the 4” for a 6” and changed it, and it was used for a few years like that.
-Then it was tapped, and a scope was added.
-Then we went out west hunting and dad wanted a backpack gun, so I found a deal on a M-29 cylinder and barrel (44mag, 4”) and it was changed and it was used like that for a time.
-Then I started bowling pin shooting and I made it into a 45 acp for that, with a 6-1/2” barrel.
-Just recently I got a 45 long colt cylinder and have now changed it into one of those (using the ACP barrel)

So it has had 3 different barrels and 3 different cylinders (calibers), I think I had better quit.

your gun, your money, the list is 'endless' you can always get it 'engraved, and then start with the different finishes ....wow
OR, how about some NICE grips , our Keith B. would be happy to 'add' to your variations for "fit, feel as well as LOOKS!!"
Many would just have gone out and bought 'another' gun to fit the "need", but your way is one that does keep the custom shops and many of us " old" gun plummers going ( and make money)

To answer your 'first' question, NO harm, NO foul............

Thank you..................

im afraid no one made money, as i did them myself, each time it was changed it cost less the $100, so it beat buying a new gun. and the origonal gun i think we got for less than $200

Well I can honestly say I have not gone nearly as far as you have! I usually opt to either buy a new (actually a NIB or ANIB used) gun for the purpose intended, or if the mod is a non permanent one, I might do that. I like the option of restoring the original gun if so desired. If the gun is simply not for me or not what I expected , it gets sold or traded.

With the price and scarcity of older parts now days, I hate to cut, chop or grind away things I can not easily restore. If you are doing these things just to further your skills and smithing ability, I can relate to that. If you have access to reasonable priced parts and enjoy it, then by all means.......

The great thing about our hobby is that each and every one of us enjoy different aspects of it. I actually enjoy tinkering, repairing, tuning, as much (maybe more) than I enjoy shooting them. Over the past 30 years it seems that I always have at least one gun on my bench in parts!

Enjoy!
