Default "J" Frame Hammer sping

Where can I get a heavy hammer spring for my 642.

Every now and then I find primers that wont go off, and I bought a couple of boxes of Remington Factory LSWCs that take a couple of hits before they go off.

I want a hammer spring that will set off any primer I can get into a 38 cal case.

HMMM..........

Remington's primers are softer than CCI's and Winchesters, and should NOT be causing your FTF's assuming that the Spring IS a Factory Spring and that it has NOT been clipped. If you are confident that the spring is a FULL Length Factory Spring, I would check for another problem such as your firing pin, firing pin bushing, timing issues, etc. I've never seen a Factory coil main spring of a J frame fail to set off a Remington Primer (try another lot # - maybe they are defective). Have you inspected the firing pin hits on the primer to make sure there are no light ones? Also like I said above, make sure that your timing is correct. If the hammer is falling prior to full lock up, the firing pin might not be hitting the primer in the correct spot.

I thought that too. I shoot about 200 rounds a week, most with the 642. Reloads, using federal and winchester primers. I shoot 150 LSWCs and desided to try factory SWCs for carry. Couldn't find any Winchesters so I ordered the Remington 158 SWCs from Natches. First cylinder too 8 hits to get all 5 rounds off, same with the rest of the box.

I also had a half of box of Speer Lawman (left over from my qualification). They all went off. Had some most of a box of Winchester 135 +Ps, they went off.

Just came in from shooting 40+ reloads, not a problem. It ain't the gun.

I want a spring that will make anything go off out of my carry gun. I bought it new and didn't mess with the spring.

kraigwy:

Maybe it's just a bad lot of Remington's............

Of all the Factory ammo I have shot in my lifetime, Remington has to be the all time worst! I have had more FTF from Remington ammo than all others combined. That is precisely why I no longer buy loaded Remington ammunition. I do have Remington Primers (in component form) that I bought a long time ago, and when I reload with them I have no issues. Before I swapped out the Factory Spring, I would continue testing other ammo and other primers. I would also shoot those problematic Remington's from another gun that you know functions 100% and see if they all work. If the pattern repeats itself, I would have to conclude that it's not the gun, NOT change the spring and just stay away from Remington's.

Follow up:

ogilvyspecial kindly sent me a 9 lb spring, it did help but still I had some FTFs with the Remington, none with my reloads.

Just found and got in the mail some Winchester 158 gr LSWCs. I just fired off a box of them and not one fail to fire.

The Winchesters are their special match non +Ps, just what I was looking for, the best part they work every time.

No more Remington for me.

To answer your question about a heavier spring, "J" frame rimfires, like the 34, 651, etc use a heavier spring from the factory. They are available from Brownells.
