Brass Hitting my Face
Today at the range I shot about 50 rounds through the SW1911SC and out of that batch, three cases hit me either in the head, bill of my cap and one right in the eye had I not had on safety glasses. I had one FTRTB issue in a new 7 round CM mag but attribute that to new standard springs in this one mag. I'll put Wolff 11# springs in that one.
Could this ejection problem with the extractor? There's not much of a way to adjust extractors in these pistols with external extractors that I know of if that's part of the problem.

have the same problem w/ my kimber, I've just never bothered to fix it. the wife refuses to shoot it cause of the cases hitting her. I've heard it's due to the external extractor.

It could be the extractor, the ejector, or just need a change in magazines. My SW1911PD Commander did that until I switched to Wilson 47D magazines. I still plan to send it back to S&W - it's covered under warranty.

It happens to me all the time with my 1911s. Not always, but once or twice per couple of mags. I just ignore it--never seems to bother me as the cases don't impact very hard. I think it has to do with my typical wimpy loads.

I've had it happen with two of my 1911s using target loads.

It's hard to ignore hot brass hitting you in the eye. As if that wasn't enough, the guy to my left was shooting a 357 Sig and as I bent over to retrieve a few cases one of his spent cases landed right inside my collar!! Talk about hot!!
This load was 7.8 gr of HS-6 and the 230 gr GDHP bullet. It's not a wimpy load and doesn't do that with my Commander with this load. I still suspect the extractor but since it's external, I'm not sure how to fix it. If it was a standard extractor I'd take a look at it and could probably fix that problem.

Things to try:
1. A different extractor.
2. A different magazine.
3. A new recoil spring.
4. A western hat.

Nope-I haven't used those since the early 80's after I found out better.

I had the same problem when I bought my 1970's manufactured Colt Combat Commander. It was purchased used and totally factory stock. The original short tang grip safety caused a nasty case of hammer bite too. Both concerns were resolved by adding a King's short duck tail type grip safety, a Wilson's "bulletproof" extractor, and extended ejector. No more blood, no more dinged up forehead, and empties ejecting strongly to the right. I carry that gun alot with complete confidence.

I have had this problem in 4" and 4.25" Commander sized guns. In my experience, a stronger recoil spring was the answer.
