Question 329PD Magna Porting?????

I am wondering if any one has ported their PD and if so have you seen an increase in sight placement timing?

Default No to porting, but

what is sight placement timing? Point of aim/point of impact would would likely dictate adjustment of sights.

Sorry maybe I miss spoke but was wondering if porting would allow me to bring the gun back on to the target faster due to less recoil. Not sure if there would be any negative affect from porting.

I have not seen this modification performed, but my suspicion is that it will not significantly help in recoil recovery time with heavy .44 Magnum loads in such a light gun. You may notice a difference with light to medium loads. Interested to see if anyone has firsthand experience.

I have heard that porting does not effect velocity, does anybody know if this is true or not?

Magnaporting only reduces muzzle flip. I've had a few ported guns, and they change the recoil impulse from having the muzzle roll upwards (flipping) to a more linear, straight back motion. My current 629 MR was magnaported by it's original owner when new because it was really rambunctious. It's still quite a handful, and spends most of it's life in the safe.

Thanks for the input looks like I will not be porting the 329.Seems like the offset is not worth it.

I don't have a 329PD that is magna-ported. I do still have one 4-inch Model 29 with magna-ported barrel. What 358156HP says is correct, for me at least. I do not notice recoil reduction but rather a re-direction of recoil. The normal recoil impulse back into the web of your hand is changed into an impulse that seems to go directly back into your wrist and forearm. I don't care for it.

Whether it is any quicker to bring the gun back on target, I really can't say. I doubt it.

My experience has been that Magna-porting seems to work pretty well with high-powered rifles, but I do not care for it with revolvers.

When recoil is more linear rather than flipping upward, in theory you are back on target quicker. That is up to you however and how well you manage recoil.

That said, I'm not sure that anything will really help shot to shot times in a 329 with full house loads other than lighter ammo.

Default 329 porting questions

Gemini customs does this process . They call it Hybra porting and Weigand used to do it. I own a few steel framed revolvers and it definitely tames them. I shoot a 357 640 2inch and i shoot fullpower 357's and it feels like 38 specials I keep meaning to chronograph a non-ported gun versus a ported gun with same barrel lengtha nd same load. On the 329 4inch its about a $1600 dollar conversion as they change the barrel also.
They used to have a video on their website but I dont see it now and I dont see the 329 ported option either

here is the video on u tube. you may have to click the triangle to make it start. When I saw the video, i called gemini and they told me that it was shot with 240 grain full power factory loads.I honestly dont believe it. I would need to shoot it to believe it can make that much of a difference.

Smith & Wesson Model 329 - Hybra-Ported? - YouTube

Personally my opinion is to get the most efficient use of ports or compensators is to use light fast moving bullets

And as an added benefit, you can light your cigar at the same time! I would simply love to see that gun fired in low light. I'll bet it would be mind blowing!

If you think about it, you have to wonder whether in a night-time shooting situation you'd be able to see a damn thing after the first round lit off. Getting back on target is great if you can see the target.

That's one of the main reasons I don't carry .357 Magnums for SD. Under stress, pupils dilate. After a certain age (which I left behind a long time ago) they are slow to recover.

Some powders dont give you a lot of flash and i shoot lots of ported guns at night and dont get spots in my eyes and
for a split second the target becomes more visible as well!!

I carry a 329 pd all the time in the field, working or hunting - its my beater S&W. I shoot hot specials or mild magnums - www. garrettcartridges.com makes a load for the 329 that will penetrate clean anything I'd ever need to shoot and its manageable. I've found the grips that fit my hand best are the wood grips that came with it. And I love shooting it...

I have a 629 "trail boss" that comes magna-ported and it does seem to shoot softer than my other 29s or 629s. I put a set of Nill grips on that one, they seem to fit my hand and make it fun to shoot also. I think the Magna-port process is legitimate and have been thinking of porting my 329, for the same reason I port some rifles, do dissipate felt recoil.

Between proper fitting grips, proper high-hand griping of that revolver and a good trigger job I've learned to love my 329pd.

There's no disputing that you can really discern a difference with Magnaported guns. Reduction of muzzle flip is very beneficial. I haven't tried other types of porting so I can't really comment on their effectiveness. The video above may truly be with full powered ammo, but I do feel they may be handloads tailored to the gun, with a reduced flash powder like AA #9 (hmmm, why haven't I tried that?). I've seen ported guns with 296/H110 fired at night (I own one) and can testify to the brilliance of the muzzle flash.

Default Porting- Myth or reality??? Its Reality!!!

My brethren smithophiles, If porting is a myth, then I have wasted a fortune accumulating the pistols that I have!!. How come in AR-15's we see compensators, muzzle breaks -not flash hider allowing
faster followup shots? Because it works!! Havent we learned anything from IPSC comp guns? I can double tap 2 shots within
a 1/2 inch at 7 yards and I am no master by any means. I have a stock ported Taurus 606 thats essentially a 2 inch k frame that when i shoot 125 hollowpoints in full 357, that i think I am shooting 22 magnums!! 41 mag and 44 mag literally hurt me but not in the ported ones. I dug them all out for a photo shoot and here they are!!!

Lets look at the Smith and Wessons first

here is a cool gun-I took a 629 PC gun and had a gunsmith
use his drill press and add vertical ports-very efficient!!

here are two PC quadported guns that I love to death. So easy to shoot!!

The two PC quadports with an Austin Behlert 41 magnum model 58 chop job on the far right-its not a punisher either

here are my ruger 101's,gemini and weigand

Taurus no longer offers ported revolvers and they are the best bargain out there because they can be had in the 250-350 dollar range. The 6 shots 357's uses K frame speedloaders and fit into K frame leather. A call to Taurus revealed that they will port a revolver for about $250 which is their set up charge. If you can find a discontinued one and shoot it , you will keep it forever!

Here are my Taurus revos

And a 41 mag Taurus that I felt needed more ports

here are my 1911's. 45acp feels like 9mm and 38 super feels like a 380!!!
These are Schuemann ramped barrels, the frame must be modified as well as the slide. They are among the most accurate barrels out there!

All of the above pictures have been uploaded using Image Shack

Maybe we should coname this thread "Show us your ports"!!

Third one from the top, which model is that and what kind of grip is that? That looks so good.

Default 329 PD Porting

I have a 329PD ported by Magnaport 2 ports per side. A buddy has the non ported and the is a noticeable difference in muzzle rise and felt recoil. For the $350 it cost it was worth it. My friends still hates shooting it lol.

I have a friend who has a power ported model 629, he loves it and it is managable for quick followup shots. He only shoots it at the range with ear plugs and muffs together. My unported 629 is just as accurate. Because the porting increases the potential for permanent hearing loss when shot unprotected, I would be unlikely to use a ported gun for hunting or self protection. Just something to consider?

I've got two 329PDs; before porting I was lucky to get 12 rounds off--recoil was bad enough, but worse was the beating my index finger would get from being whacked by the back of the trigger guard (200 grain Silvertip Winchester). Magnaported both--the second quadraported--and the difference was dramatic, bringing perceived recoil down to about 44 Special level, and I could easily shoot 50+ rounds. These are my primary backpacking gun as they are so flexible, from snakes to grizzlies (if it came to that), and have fired a handful of rounds without hearing protection and while I don't commend the practice, I can't say it's any worse than firing a 30-06 or similar. All that said, I wouldn't recommend the 329 to anyone due to gas-cutting of the cylinder face, which has happened with only a dozen or so rounds fired, and with every type of ammo I've tried. No wonder they quit making them.....

I'm so glad all you portheads like your guns. As for me, I hate it when a ported big bore shows up at the range. Things become unpleasant in a hurry. I find the ranges, I use, indoor or out, empty out shortly after a ported big bore arrives. So enjoy, knowing that other folks don't like you much. At least temporarily.
