Default Fixed to adjustable sights?

Has anybody installed adjustable rear sights on a fixed sight model like the model 10? I asked a well-known gunsmithing company and they recommended a S&W rear sight and a Weigand adjustable front sight, which would have involved milling the backstrap and the top of the barrel. I sent in my gun and they said they couldn't do that work after all and sent the gun back unmodified.

I was hoping for something like the old King Gunsight Company modifications, but I guess nobody does this work anymore. My gun is a Model 10-8.

Google "Wondersight". They cost $40.00, and while they're not perfect, they do offer a much-improved sight picture over the old narrow slit rear sights on the round tops.

The cost of milling ar revolver to fit adjustable sights will far exceed the value of the gun. Buy a Model 15.

I agree with buying a model 15 being the best option. If you go with a Wondersight you will have to drill and tap a hole in the side plate.

As i mentioned, I wanted a "King" type sight installation on my Model 10. I bought the gun from a lot of police trade-ins. It was my first revolver and I couldn't hit anything with it as it seemed to shoot way off to the left. I have other revolvers that are fixed sight and some that have adjustable sights too.

In any case, I've pretty much abandoned the project. I'd love to find a Model 15, or even better, a K-38 for informal club matches. I'm now using a 1923 era Colt Officer's Model, but Smith & Wessons fit my hand better.

The value of the gun? To me, priceless.

About the only practical method these days of converting a fixed sight to an adjustable sight gun is to install a rib with sights.
These are mounted to the frame and barrel by screws, and usually fits down over the front sight.

These were popular on PPC guns.
Aristocrat makes several models:

revolver rib at Brownells

Probably no competent pistolsmith will install a S&W rear sight on a fixed sight frame these days because machining off that much metal greatly weakens the frame in a critical area.

And why ruin a perfectly good M10?

That raises a question with me. Is the Mod 15, 17, etc. adjustable sighted S&W's any different dimensions in the topstrap? If I understand correctly, the Mod 10 and the Mod 15 would be identical other than the sights. So milling the topstrap (done identically the same as the factory would do the 15) should result in no lesser strength in the frame than the 15?
