Default Model 17 cylinder stop play

The cylinder stop on my model 17 seems to have a little to much free play side to side ,about 4 thou. It is a lot more than my other 17.

Can someone tell me what it would take to tighten it up.
The resulting cylinder play will put it out of time with gentle movement of the cylinder.

Also when I drop a k22 range rod into the barrel with the cylinder open it sticks a little right where the collar of the frame goes around the barrel? It is not real tight.
The gun shoots nicely.

Grateful for any info.

You may want to measure the ball (part that goes through the frame and engages the cylinder) on the two cylinder stops and see if they are the same thickness. If so then measure the slots on the two revolvers and see if they are the same. In days gone by it was not unheard of for a gunsmith to widen the slot to fix a sticking cylinder stop.

Guess I'm a little confused. OP stated he had too much clearance. I didn't notice him saying anything about sticking.

There is an oversize cylinder stop. Fit it to the tightest of the notches. link

It seems the movement is in the ball itself.

I am very concerned about the range rod getting tight when it gets to the frame collar.
The Kuhnhausen shop manual calls that issue a defective bore.
I guess I need to get the gun to a good smith or s/w service center.

Thanks

Frank

The OP didn't say anything about sticking. I was positing that if an earlier gunsmith had enlarged the slot that could account for the excess clearance.

This sounds like everyone jumped off the deep end. The cylinder SHOULD have "some free play side to side". This isn't a Colt, S&W's do have, and need, "some free play side to side". Arbitrarily reducing it can make matters worse. Shoot the gun, if accuracy is good leave it alone.
