There have been small batches of S&W 45ACP revolvers over the decades that were NOT cut with a chamber shoulder/ledge. These absolutely needed moonclips.
The overwhelming majority do have properly cut chamber shoulders & can reliably shoot properly loaded 45ACP ammo without moonclips by headspacing the case mouth on the chamber shoulder.
I
rarely use moonclips with my handloaded 45ACP & 10mm Auto ammo in my revolvers & after thousands of rounds thru them misfires are not an issues in them without moonclips, even after I reamed my M610 to 10MAG or my 325TR to
45WSM.
However, for self-defense or hunting I do, and recommend, the use of moonclips in them.
