625 chambers
Professional troll here, read a lot but don't say a lot . I just got a 625 and was doing the normal checking of all sizes. What struck me odd was that the chambers taper from .479 to .475 right at the chamber to throat junction. All chambers are consistent, no strays. is this taper normal???
Thank you all in advance.

Is it a 625-8? many of us believe dash 8 cylinders need to be reamed to correct the weird chambers. Carmoney reamed lots of them for people before he shut his gunsmith biz down.

Yes, they taper and it sounds like (from your dimensions) yours' are undersize. 625-8s in particular need the chambers reamed. They're both undersize and out of round. I've reamed a number of them. Good time to chamfer the chamber mouths also.

Yes, we're talking 45 acp. 625-2s were part of a factory recall for undersize chambers.

My 325NG chambers run .478" to .474".
The SAAMI specs are .4796" to .4740" (+.004") so yours look good.
The chambers are tapered, as is the cartridge.

That's a chamber that's smaller that what I think you'll see in practice. Saami specs are voluntary guidelines. You'll see alot of variance from them in practice.
The issue I found is reloaded rds. It's easy to have brass that was fired in semi-autos ("Glocked" brass is the worst) that is .480+" just above the extractor groove AFTER resizing.
I have Clymers' 45 acp revolver chamber finish reamer. Been a while since I went thru this but I think my reamed chambers are .480+" .100" in from the cylinder face. They need to be there for rds to drop in unless you're only using new un-fired brass.

Exactly!! My dash 2 drove me crazy back when I bought it new some 20 yrs. ago. We were all just getting into 625s in IPSC. Some guys had no trouble at all, but mine would only run with new factory ammo. If I could get handloads to chamber, they would NOT extract which leads to donut holes in your weak hand with blood. I finally sent mine to S&W and paid for a new cylinder. They wouldn't admit anything was wrong but the new cylinder ran fine.

Thank you one and all. I made a dumb assumption that since the cases could be resized with a carbide sizer then it must be straight walled and gave it no further attention. Some custom reaming may be coming up.
