Default 17-4 push off help

My 17-4 has a serious push off issue. With the gun cocked in single action mode the slightest touch to the trigger causes the gun to fire. You can also push on the hammer while it is cocked and it will fall without pulling the trigger. I read the FAQ about correcting push off and feel comfortable I could correct it but if I screw it up I will have to buy a new hammer. My 17-4 has a target hammer, are these available through S&W, Numrich, Brownells, etc? Also, are there any other parts that should be replaced to correct this?

Thanks in advance.

To repair push off you should work on the Trigger not the Hammer Sear.See this: FAQ's About 2/3 the way down.....

Yep, push off is usually, but not always, the trigger. Look here: FAQ's post #6. If the hammer notch looks good start with the trigger. When there's an issue you can frequently, but not always, see which area is the problem.

About 10 years ago, one of my first "smithery" attempts was correcting a push-off problem on a K-22. My expert stoning fixed it for a while, until it unexpectedly failed at the indoor range a couple weeks later. I cocked for single action and the hammer slipped off of the, now, worn-down trigger, putting a round into the ceiling tiles. Nobody heard or saw it, but it scared the dung out of me. If you're not sure of what you're doing, buy a new trigger. That's the best fix.
