Is this on the safety hammerless or the D/A? I know what you are saying. This has to be one of S&WS biggest pain in the •^*! I have sat and tried for an hour to get a spring to stay in place and at other times it goes in one try!
Look at the spring, one end is more bent and curved than the other. I have had more success with the more curved part towards the outside. Good luck!
