Anyone used Power Custom hammer nose replacement?

I've never broken one but I broke the spring in my 686 after 175,000 rounds. It looks OK but the price seem high for what you are getting.

Do you still think it is too much if the only option was to use the gun as a paperweight? That is getting to be the situation were it not for after-market suppliers like Ron Power!

Factory K-frame hammer nose replacements are getting scarce. Who's used the Power Custom version and what are the reviews? . . .

While I don't have any experience to share on the hammer nose, I have had excellent success with other Power Custom products.

As more and more OEMs outsource replacement parts to vendors who win the low bid . . . I tend to trust known high-quality vendors such as Power Custom . . . especially for products that my life could depend on.

Numerich has them in stock for $6.00 which is why I think $31.50 plus shipping is too high. There are plenty of these parts out there and I have never heard of this being a part that is prone to breakage with normal use. I have used some Powers Custom parts in my 10-22 and they were nicely made, but in this instance I think he's trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.

Interesting. Please elucidate how a broken hammer nose is a problem that doesn't exist -- I'm fascinated to know, because I'm looking at one right now. ;) Or are you saying Power himself is trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist, i.e., hammer noses don't break often enough to need the aftermarket support?

Common problem? Not to my knowledge. Rare? Hardly -- plenty forum members have had a firing pin break, and are discovering how much harder it is finding replacements for the older Smiths, hence why companies like Power and Jack First are finding a niche to fill.

Post-'88 hammer noses are available at Numrich for $6.00, yes. Unfortunately, mine -- like many -- is pre-'88; Numrich charges $22.55 for those...when they have them...approximately $7.00 less than the Power Custom part.

If you know where plenty of the pre-'88 factory hammer noses are out there at good prices, do let me know...

Anyone else besides me not know there is a pre and post hammer nose???

Glad I read this thread after all...

What model are you working on I might have one and if I do I send it to you. I also have S&W factory parts manuals so I can give you the part number if I don't.

That's very kind of you, Yorkie; I'm happy to monitor Numrich until one comes in or snag a Power Custom if I'm in a pinch. It's a 13-1 that loves to play little games like this with me. ;)

Thankfully the those old Firing Pins are very strong are rarely break. When they do they are a real challenge to find - at least unused. Sometimes I do stumble across a few used ones at a Gun Show, but as far as I know Powers is about the only game in town for new FP and Rivet sets. While Ive never held these parts from Powers, his other products have always been produced with quality and I would expect these to be top notch as well.

Just a not here, but many parts that Numrich sells for old models are used parts. They are usually in good shape, but just don't assume that ALL their parts are new - 'cause they are not. Nothing wrong with them, just saying that may be why they are less expensive than Powers. Numrich scoffs up large parts inventories at very low prices while Powers is paying todays labor rate and todays material costs to produce newly made parts for old guns.

It was requested in PM that I post an image of the broken hammer nose.
