I have a Victory model Smith and Wesson, early 40's. It is the older version with small pawl that is supposed to engage the ratchet when the tripper is pulled. I am not positive, but I think it should have a small spring that allows it to apply forward pressure reengaging with the ratchet during each tripper pull. Right now, the pawl only engages the ratchet if the gun is pointed down. At level it is hit and miss, and pointed up, it does not. Any information on whether it is supposed to hold a spring, and if so, where I might find one? Thanks,

Greg

Spring may be present but not properly
Installed. A small prong located in the trigger applies forward force to hand via a leg. It is possible that with the age it could have broken. If have a qualified smith take a look or some one familiar with s&w revolvers.

That vintage revolver will have a trigger that has a hand lever driven by a small diameter coil spring, not the wire torsion spring of later models. Usually what happens is an owner, with no understanding of the mechanism, pulls the hand out while the trigger is still in the gun. He then tries to re-assemble by simply pushing the hand into the trigger while the trigger is in the gun! Can't be done!!! The trigger has to be removed from the frame, the hand lever pushed up from the bottom, and the hand then installed with the lever above the hand torsion pin (the short one). The assembled trigger and hand are then installed together.

If you aren't familiar with the S&W mechanism do yourself a favor. Either take the gun to someone who does know these guns, or buy a copy of "The S&W Revolver, a Shop Manual" by Jerry Kuhnhausen.
