S & W Model 39-2 Double Action Only
I used to fire my first round double action and then the remaining rounds would fire single action. Now the pistol fires only double action. I disassembled and cleaned it thoroughly and it still is double action only!
Any ideas as to what has happened to it?

So, you can not cock the hammer manually? Or it won't stay cocked after firing double action? Or both?

Hammer will cock manually; but when fired, the remaining shots after the first one are double action only. It will not allow me to use in single action mode without manually cocking the hammer.

Hmmm.
Would you take $25.00 for the gun? If not, any competent gunsmith should be able to restore your pistol to proper functioning. Something is worn out. I've never been inside a Model 39 so I can't tell you how to fix it.

$25.00 for my pistol? Riiiight. That's not going to happen.
Will tear into it and check the hammer for worn spots on the engagement points. The single action sear may be worn to the point where it won't engage any longer and simply slides past to allow the hammer to go forward to the resting point. Then it will then fire with a double action pull.
