Default First attempt at refinishing stocks

A friend has a 29-3 that he bought years ago because he got a good deal. It had been treated a little rough and some brilliant person painted the stocks with what looks like brown paint. They looked hideous. I offered to attempt to refinish them, as he had nothing to lose by letting me try. I found some useful info on the forum and used the recommended method. I soaked them in acetone for 3 hours (the forum post recommended over night) and removed the paint and anything else that may have been on them with fine steel wool and a copper brush. After drying, I applied three coats of high gloss tung oil, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Here are some before, during and after pictures. I am happy with the results.

When you say High gloss tung oil, did you mean tung oil finish? Or pure tung oil?

I couldn't find the "Old Masters tung oil with varnish", so I used this stuff.

I like this stuff, not too thick and flattens out nicely.

Good looking job! The next time do the checkering with a 50/50 mix with a thinner. I am not sure what to thin Tung oil with but I use Tru-oil and thin it with minerial spirits. I only apply one coat on the checkering.
