The spring is oriented properly in the picture on the right.....the short leg, and the coiled portion of the spring go back into the small cavity directly above the cavity made for the end of the trigger lever.
If you have one, it will help to secure the trigger in a small padded bench vise while you are re-assembling the spring and hand.
Also, the hand torsion spring for the J-frame MIM triggers, part # 22751, does not have the 90 degree bend in the short leg like the one in your photo. You may not have the correct spring. Photo below of 22751.
