Unhappy Engraving: Tracing Faint Lettering

I have a nickel Triple Lock barrel (44spl 5") that was once re-plated. The lettering on top of the barrel is very faint but readable. This is a project gun and was re-nickeled at the factory on 3/28. When the mechanics are complete it will be engraved and nickel plated as it left the factory. This will be its 3rd plating. After de-plating, the letters should be more pronounced and the barrel will be in the white ready for polishing. My intent is to polish all areas of the barrel except the top where the 2 line address is. Does anyone know of an engraver who can trace engrave over the lettering to produce good results after plating?

I have heard good things about Fords, but it would probably have to be before plating. After plating, you would have to cut through the plating.

Yup, any engraving MUST be done before any plating or bluing. If you did it after plating, assuming you can find someone who would do it, you would be compromising the plating, allowing moister to start rusting the metal underneath.

One source for restoration of stamping on firearms is the Turnbull company.
They're world famous for antique firearms restorations.

Turnbull Restoration & Manufacturing Co.

Any really good, professional firearms engraver can also do it.
Stay AWAY from amateurs and wanna be's.

What factory is doing this for you? Last I heard S&W wouldn't work on anything made before 1958(this was some time, back)?

Several years ago, I asked Ford's to caliber stamp a rifle I sent them to reblue, they electric penciled the caliber on the barrel? Another time I sent them a 1917/37 to have chrome stipped off and they never returned all the parts? Now, I'm hesitant to use them.

I've heard bad things about Ford's...particularly in the last year or so. Some talk of family trouble possibly causing poor quality and slow turnaround time? Seems like there was a thread or two about it on this forum. Maybe they've got it straightened out, I don't know.

I'm not sure Turnbull is doing any more work on Smiths. The website suggests contacting them about any guns that aren't on their list of guns they work on...and Smiths aren't on the list now.
