Over 50 front sight color (fixed sight revolver)
no young eyes please.
I painted my front sight flat white as a base.
I bought two Testors orange.....one is more neon than the other.
would that be too bright?
which one would you want?
I could not get the front to focus....and color is deceiving.

The swab on the right seems to stand out the best in the second picture I think. It's just my opinion. What say all?

Just remember to buy black targets. The orange ones don't do well with orange sights. I started to buy orange targets for my classes, because most sights are black, then I found out that my 686+ 4" is everyone's favorite gun to shoot in class...red ramp front sight doesn't contrast well at all.
I know! Modern problems, right?

Do you wear glasses?
I'm with Trifocals but couldn't focus on front sight, bought the Merit Optical aid and works great!
I used a neon green tip on one of my revolvers, as mentioned red or orange on a red target dot doesn't work so well

color
I painted one red, one pink, one neon green. Test shot at different times of day. The neon green worked best for me. Jim

I've gone to all white myself. In the old days reds were good to go. After 50 and bifocals, white is way better. Try the white before you go with either.

All white is not bad, but my preference is neon or flourescent green on my front sights. I want my rear sights all black! As a concession to my old eyes, I have slightly modified some rear sights so the notch is slightly wider than the originals. That gives a slight bit more daylight on either side of the front sight blade. Doesn't take much so go slowly!

I recall many years ago, I bought a M65 4" where someone draped some thick orange nail polish on the front sight. I remember that front sight popped out for me. but my eyes were 14 years younger.
Where I shoot .....grass/weeds are dry and yellowish. White and Neon green has washed out on distant shots.
We shoot TQ21 targets and white will wash out.
I am leaning toward the first picture (left) which is on the right on the second picture.

Obviously everyone is different but I pick up bright green better than any or the reds or oranges.

Don't drive yourself nuts over the color - - - -
The beauty of the Testor's Paint is it's easily removed and changed for another color. If you are just changing the shade slightly, you can go right over the original after it dries.

I use Traffic Cone nail polish..more durable than model paint, no base needed. Just apply a few coats.

Actually, I have found Testor's to be incredibly durable. I have some on a M15 and a M18 for at least 15 years with no degradation. The KEY is to clean the front sight thoroughly with some Alcohol to remove all oils and solvents. Use a Wooden toothpick to apply the paint and use 2 or 3 thin coats rather than one thick coat. If you apply 2 -3 coats, the white undercoating is not even necessary. Let the coats dry at least 24 hours before adding another coat. I prefer 3 coats as I like it thicker and I like the sight grooves to be well filled. I usually duplicate the "look" of what the Factory red insert looks like and only go half way up the grooves on the ramp.

Been using Testers fluorescent orange for 20+ years on fixed sighted guns.
Reading Chief38's post I've painted the full length of the front sight on my 3" 65 and 4" 681 for maximum flash sight picture!
My field grade Model 18 is only about 1/2 the sight.

I use vinyl lure paint which is used for lead sinker/hook type jigs. I do a coat with white for base, then a coat of flo orange which is the color of the lighter tone you show. Bought at Bass Pro and made by Component Systems and made for metal and won't chip off. Very toxic fumes and a bit pricey at $6 a 1oz bottle.

This works for me on my Model 65. Testors flat white base with orange coat on top. I experimented first with a piece of blue painters tape to see how many notches up from the bottom to start so that the color showing is perfectly matched with the rear notch.

I've replaced some front sight inserts and yellow has worked for both low light and bright light situations. Give it a try if your testing colors.
