Magna porting?
Does Magna porting work?
It’s real benefits are?
It’s draw backs are?
Which revolvers shouldn’t have it done and why?
Thanks

Magna-porting is trapezoidal slots cut in the muzzle end of your barrel , on either side of the front sight. This exhausts gas straight up, and reduces muzzle flip, and recoil. Many do not feel the benefits are worth the price and the reduced value of your revolver after having it done. If you are a top level competitive shooter, the time savings of the muzzle rise to the next shot can make a few thousandths of a second difference and that can amount to dollars in some competitions.
If you are a hunter and need a follow up shot, the shot recovery time may result in your getting your game.
It would probably be of no advantage on anything less powerful than a 357 magnum.

Magna-ported a 3" 65 in the mid-80s..... it was what all the cool kids were doing and was written up in every gun rag.
I've been sorry I did it ..... great gun but I carry mostly +P.38s. I would not do it again in a carry gun.......
it can help with follow up shots if you are shooting full bore magnums.........

If you don't already wear ear muffs while hunting, if you use a magna ported gun, you'll need to.

I would say the benefit is greater in a longer barreled gun due to the fact that the ports are farther away from your hand, giving them more leverage against the central axis of the gun when it recoils. I agree that magnum calibers may benefit more from it than a standard loading due to more pressure and gas. It does have a negative effect on value if it isn't factory, and many don't like it so it will limit your buyers if you decide to sell. It also makes a gun louder. I have a solid end cap for my 460 so the ports are bypassed. Quiets it down a little.
In a short barreled defensive gun i would say it's more of a liability. You may be forced to shoot between yourself and another person, and another point of fire coming out of the gun is not a good thing.

IMHO Magna-porting is sort of a gimmick. While it does reduce felt recoil a little, what it also does is increases the noise level a lot. The cuts are also a royal p.i.t.a. to clean out, more than likely they reduce velocity as they let gases which normally propel the projectile are vented out before the end of the barrel. All in all, I do not care for it at all an would not do it. That's my opinion and YMMV of course.
A secondary reason not to do it is because to me a Magna-ported gun is not worth the same as the same model that is original, so to me the "monetary value" is drastically decreased. Again, that is debatable I suppose.

Magna-porting, as most barrel porting systems, does work. It does reduce muzzle rise and the higher the operating pressure of the rounds fired, the more effective the porting becomes.
Down sides to porting a barrel include reduced value of the firearm, difficult to clean powder and lead fouling from the ports, increased noise for the shooter.
I've avoided the temptation to have any of my firearms ported.

I've had the opportunity to try two guns with the actual Mag-na-port process, a S&W 4" 41 Magnum revolver, and a 12Ga. Benelli shotgun. In both cases, the Mag-na-porting did significantly reduce muzzle rise. But as a result, recoil was much more straight back. I did not care for the trade off, as having the gun come straight back, hard, seemed more unpleasant than the recoil of similar, unported, guns. I never had the desire to have a firearm Mag-na-ported afterwards. I do understand Mag-na-porting being desirable where reducing muzzle rise is paramount for whatever reason.....ymmv

Had it done to my 35 Remington 14” Contender back in the 80’s. Made a noticeable difference in recoil.

As noted: Yes it works and yes it's louder, and it does decrease the value to a collector, not so much to a shooter.
Had a Ruger Super Blackhawk done years ago for hunting and silhouette shooting.
