Default Easiest Fix for this?

What’s the easiest fix for this? Not sure of the exact name of the part but the thumb piece screw broke on this 19-5. Thanks

Bolt stud broke. You’ll need a new bolt and perhaps the thumb piece nut if you can’t save the old one.

The only fix is to replace the Bolt. Order a thumb piece nut too if you cannot remove the broken stud from it easily.

Nothing else will be needed. One suggestion is do not disassemble the gun until you receive the parts, you would just be begging trouble by the chance of losing something during the time the gun is apart waiting for the replacements. Second suggestion is be sure the parts you order are NEW. The Bolt is a fitted part and if you get a used one you may not be able to get it to work properly.

Everything you need is on these linked pages, but the bolt is used. Google Jack First, and call S&W, 800-331-0852 too.

That happened to me with a 2" 64 I had. I was shooting at the range and I thought the thumb latch nut came loose and it fell off. Nope. The stud broke, just like yours.

I ordered a new bolt from Numrich, installed it, and it was good to go after that.

I recently replaced the bolt in a Mod. 15-2. It had one of those kinky 2 piece bolts and didn't function properly. I replaced it with the normal one piece bolt from EBAY for like $15.

The only problem I had was that it was too thick. I had to stone it down to where it sat BELOW the trench it fitted in. Beware of the spring/plunger in the tail of the bolt.

I you get a used bolt, make sure it comes with the spring/plunger.
I have seen two different types and neither will work in the wrong bolt.

HELP!
Got in the parts I needed from Numrich. The new bolt I received, the hole that the plunger and spring goes in at the rear of the bolt is drilled too deep. The spring and plunger go all the way in with no resistance. Can I put any type of spacer in to fill the hole in some? PLease reply.

Sure that would work! Make your spacer of a length that allows the tip of the plunger to fit in the hole till it's flush or only sticking out a maximum of ~ 1/32" when fully compressed.

The bolts with the deep hole used a long plunger and standard spring length, or a short plunger with a long spring.

The very early hand ejectors like triple locks have a notched plunger with a lock screw to retain it.

If you got the plunger/spring from Numrich, they gave you the wrong ones. You might try to get them to send you the right ones.

I figured out how much deeper the hole was in the new bolt and cut the middle part of a small trim/finishing nail to fit and stuck it down in the hole.
It worked just fine. The gun is back together.
In future scenarios like this, is there any way to order the correct bolt?

Bravo!

Generally not w/o a phone discussion and one or two tries. In most cases the buyer knows more about the parts than the supplier.

Try finding a used part on ebay. I recently got a used bolt from ebay that included the correct spring and plunger. After some bubbaing it fit and worked fine.
