I bought a 686-2 4" off a fella and have taken it to the range only twice - the first time I was thinking I was having a bad day, but this time I took my time and have concluded that the daggone rear sight slide on it is too tall. I've got the screw cranked all the way down and I'm still shooting 5" high @ 15yds - aiming low starts to bring me back on center. I just can't adjust this thing any further down!

I also have a 4" 686 no dash that's a fine shooter (right on target) so I broke out the calipers and tried to eyeball/measure them to compare the rear sight slides. Here's what I see:

686: 0.1410 overall height, 0.685 notch height
686-2: 0.1980 overall height, 0.880 notch height

Adjust those numbers towards wherever they look right, it was kinda hard to get exact measurements but that's dang close. As you can see the two slides are of greatly different heights. The front sight measures the same on both guns, it's the kind that's part of the barrel and measures 0.3915 from barrel to top, 0.2175 from top of the first ramp/rise to the top (the spot where you might see a pinned on front sight on some other models).

I'm thinking, based on my mad caliper skillz, that the right height I want to buy is 0.146 since I see several listings for that -- does that sound correct? And, can I buy the one marked "300520 Rear Sight Assembly, .146, White Outline, For 4-6,8 3/8" Barrels" and simply replace the entire deal without having to mess with all those little plunger doohickeys? I'd rather have a white outline so this part seems like a good choice as well.

Am I going in the right direction? Is there something else I need to measure to get the right sight -- I see they have a 0.160 and a 0.196 (I bet the one I have is that 0.196 right?) so I'm not quite sure... but I think the 0.146 White Outline is the right one.

Unless you are shooting some radically HEAVY bullets in your .357 Magnum to cause your gun to shoot so high, I would agree that 0.146" is the height to get.

You might want to confirm that by switching sights between your two guns to see if it makes a difference.

The easiest way to get your gun to lower point of impact of course, is to take a flat file and dress off the top of the rear sight blade. Put a dab of cold blue on it, oil, and it's done.

0.146 is correct but if you're that far off at 15 yards something else in going on.

So you've seen me shoot, eh? That number was just a swag of how off I was, it could have been less or more -- I just stopped shooting, crumpled up the target and left the range disgusted. Didn't actually measure the target...

john: I was using Speer Lawman Cleanfire 158+P rounds, my target ammo of choice.
