I was in need of a project today. So I used some scrap pine and cedar to make a couple presentation boxes. One will have a floating star field and the other has dedicated raised field. I’m pleased with the first attempt at the boxes. Stars will go on tomorrow. Both boxes are all wood wood construction. Not sure what material to use inside? Not sure what section to put this in.

Added some hinges to both boxes. The stained box is a hidden barrel hinges, the lighter box is inset hidden butt hinges. Stars coming soon..

I’ve used a table saw in the past and cut the tops off boxes, works great. I also have a box jig. I was trying the new spline corners on these which turned out well. The tops are two different kinds of wood to create the stripes, so couldn’t use the box method to cut the top off.

I did professional high end wood working my whole life - which explains why I avoid it like the plague now days - lol! I'm good at it but I don't enjoy it any longer.

That said, I have done more wood working in our new home in the last 4 months than I've done in the last 13 years! I am presently building another 12 closet shelves (which I am dreading) but what we want is to match the existing shelving which is sturdy, nice looking and utilitarian. Can't get them as they have been on nationwide back order and we are tired of waiting - so I am building them. We hate the white wire shelving and don't want the cheap flimsy press board shelves either. So a building them I will go.

So.... while I have often thought about building presentation gun boxes for a few pieces of my collection but just can't get into it.

Those are great looking boxes. Love the stained ones and can't wait to see the stars attached. I'll be following this thread.

I used to make pistol display boxes too. I used red oak with mine and a clear satin polyester finish. I used a dense foam covered with cloth for interiors. Sold many @ $50 on up to $200.

UPDATE, Just finished the stars on the natural color box and added the interior to the stained box. The stars will go on the stained box next. The interior is permanent on the stained box, built to custom fit 686 586 and so on.

Would anyone on the forum buy a custom box like this? Trying to see if I want to sell some hobby boxes I made. If so what kind of price point would you pay? These are hand made all wood and no metal construction. They have a few quirks that come with handmade stuff. Feedback would be great. Thanks.

Very nice work. I've often thought of making boxes but couldn't come up with a way to do the interiors.

The interior is always the toughest part. Getting it to look good is not easy. I’m not a big fan of flocking or a cheap pillow. I’ve come up with a way to trace any gun and then transfer that to thin plywood, which is on top of foam and the covered with the faux leather. Revolvers are also tricky because the barrel is heavy and needs to be supported or it will appear like it is lower than the rest of the gun.

Very nice work, I have a 1911 which would look good in a flag box.

I agree 1911 look very good in presentation boxes. I might do the natural color (non stained) to fit a 1911. A lot of people have gone away from presentation boxes since everything is generally in safes nowadays, but I still think passing on a special firearm to a family member deserves a nice case.

I really enjoy building these boxes, I’m just wondering if it’s worth it.

So the question is ... how did you affix the stars and how did you keep them straight??
