I posted just the other day that I received my Ballistol order. Well here's the short lived experience I had with it! It was basically purchased to use in my workshop as a rust inhibitor and lubricant for my tools and machinery. If I liked it I was planning to switch from my current Fav. Breakfree CPL (used for everything including firearms) which I think is the cat's meow! The only reason I tried the Ballistol is because of all the fans here on the Forum and that it is supposedly toxin free.
OK - so I received the Ballistol yesterday and took a brand new Flannel cloth from the bolt of fabric I have and doused it with the pump sprayer after shaking the can up. Immediately I was grossed out by the smell of "sweaty feet" but like a Trooper I endured and after soaking the Flannel I stored it in an old clean cookie tin. This morning I walked into my workshop and the entire place smelled like a locker room after a full court basket ball game! OK - I'm tough, call me a wuss, call me anything you like, but this made my short list of things that I will not tolerate! That short list includes Garlic, Sulphur and indoor cooking smells from Fish!
So as far as why Germany lost the war.........I guess the German Army could just not sneak up without the USGI's smelling their rifles a mile away - treated with the Ballistol - lol. Well, I finally found out it's not for me! Not judging how it works as I never got that far. I could not work in a workshop that smells like a locker room. So back to Amazon it is going today!
I will gladly stick with my Break-free CLP (has little to no oder at all) as I have since Rig #2 Oil was discontinued many years ago. It has not failed me, it is quite low on the Toxicity chart, only bested by Ballistol and Frog Lube, and those are not coming into my home. So there you have it, my short lived experience with Ballistol. BTW it's not just me! This morning after my wife made coffee, she came into the workshop to see what I was up to and she said, "what IS that smell"? I was laughing as I told her it was my new deodorant - lol!
Anyway, I took the entire experience well, laughed a lot and at least I took the Ballistol plunge. Now I know it's not for me. I guess many don't mind it - hey, I actually like the smell of the creosote they use on RR ties so what do I know.
