I posted just the other day that I received my Ballistol order. Well here's the short lived experience I had with it! It was basically purchased to use in my workshop as a rust inhibitor and lubricant for my tools and machinery. If I liked it I was planning to switch from my current Fav. Breakfree CPL (used for everything including firearms) which I think is the cat's meow! The only reason I tried the Ballistol is because of all the fans here on the Forum and that it is supposedly toxin free.

OK - so I received the Ballistol yesterday and took a brand new Flannel cloth from the bolt of fabric I have and doused it with the pump sprayer after shaking the can up. Immediately I was grossed out by the smell of "sweaty feet" but like a Trooper I endured and after soaking the Flannel I stored it in an old clean cookie tin. This morning I walked into my workshop and the entire place smelled like a locker room after a full court basket ball game! OK - I'm tough, call me a wuss, call me anything you like, but this made my short list of things that I will not tolerate! That short list includes Garlic, Sulphur and indoor cooking smells from Fish!

So as far as why Germany lost the war.........I guess the German Army could just not sneak up without the USGI's smelling their rifles a mile away - treated with the Ballistol - lol. Well, I finally found out it's not for me! Not judging how it works as I never got that far. I could not work in a workshop that smells like a locker room. So back to Amazon it is going today!

I will gladly stick with my Break-free CLP (has little to no oder at all) as I have since Rig #2 Oil was discontinued many years ago. It has not failed me, it is quite low on the Toxicity chart, only bested by Ballistol and Frog Lube, and those are not coming into my home. So there you have it, my short lived experience with Ballistol. BTW it's not just me! This morning after my wife made coffee, she came into the workshop to see what I was up to and she said, "what IS that smell"? I was laughing as I told her it was my new deodorant - lol!

Anyway, I took the entire experience well, laughed a lot and at least I took the Ballistol plunge. Now I know it's not for me. I guess many don't mind it - hey, I actually like the smell of the creosote they use on RR ties so what do I know.

Update:

So I found out Amazon will not accept returns of these Ballistol cans and so they did issue a full refund and told me to dispose of it. I just got back from my Neighbors house and gave him all three cans - he says he loves the stuff! All better. :)

Good to know if you tell amazon it smells like sweaty feet you get refund and can keep it.

Wasn't looking to "get over" on them, but I could not wait to get it out of my workshop! Glad my Neighbor likes it! I had heard it smelled, but sometimes what is awful to one person is like perfume to others - ie: Hoppes #9!

Yeah, I've read bad things about that odor.
If you're looking for no-toxicity gun cleaner with no fumes, you might like MC25.

Thanks you for the recommendation. Although I have not found it yet (recently moved to a different State - escaped NY :) ), I believe I do have some. Don't think I tried it yet, but I think I have some in one of my last 4 boxes I will soon be unpacking. Moving is a real chore!! I am a sucker for new gun lubes and oils - haven't been many I have not bought yet. Ballistol was one though. Well, now I know. :)

I switched to the non-toxic products from Gunwerkz. I can clean guns in the house and a couple of hours later the wife doesn't even notice. Has a faint peppermint smell.

I can tolerate the smell of skunk, but not Ballistol.
I get a whiff of that and it makes me want to puke.

chief38,
You are not alone, I find the smell of Ballistol to be a cross between old long lost mildewed sweaty socks, stagnant pond scum water with a little moldy black licorice mixed in. I stocked & sold a bunch of it to the black powder shooters, but I am convinced most of them have lost their sense of smell from their use of black powder anyway.
For over 30+ years, I've had great luck using G96 Gun Treatment on all my firearms, magazines and anything else metallic that needs to be protected from corrosion. At least to me, the smell is very pleasant and my ex never complained (at least not about the G96 smell).

Personally, I can't stand Breakfree CLP, as I perceive locker room scent, but I tried it 30 years ago and it may have changed. I've found that anything that works has a distinct pleasant odor including Hoppes's #9, CorrosionX, Marvel Mystery Oil, Kroil and LPS, all of which permeate my work spaces. They all have a goodly amount of carcinogenic toluene, benzene or xylene. They don't call them aromatics for nothing. My wife hates all of them. The most pervasive and best fragrance comes from Belray fork oil which incessantly drips from my antique motorcycle.

Back around 88 got a GI gallon jug of CLP from a NG Lt. Down to 1/4 gallon now, smells ok to me. Not sue what to do when it runs out.

Every time I smell Ballistol I want to throw up.Has to be one of the worst smells out there. My tolerance level is pretty high but for some reason this stuff puts it over the top.I am glad to see I am not alone.

you guys should all try Gunzilla. You can get it on Amazon. I have been using it for several years and really like it. It has a pleasant smell and cleans well. My wife always hated the smell of Hope's when I was cleaning my guns but she never even notices Gunzilla. It is a CLP.

I agree, G96 has a pleasant, sweet smell and it also works well.
