Default Model 35 firing pin removal help

Hey Guys, I recently acquired a beautiful Model 35-1 22 rimfire.
Unfortunately, it seriously suffers from light strikes that no amount of cleaning will solve. I believe that the firing does not protrude forward quite enough, certainly not as far as the one on my Model 17.

Like the 17s and 34s, it has the old style frame mounted firing pin with a bushing. I was thinking that if I removed the bushing and shaved a few thou off the back I would gain the forward travel that I need. Today I received a cup tipped punch from Brownells and attempted to drive out the bushing retaining pin. It would not budge! In fact the tip of the punch started to mushroom.

Am I missing something here? Is there a trick to removing this pin? Thanks in advance for any help.

Try replacing the mainspring with a new factory spring before doing anything else!

I will try that or putting a washer under the spring before sending it to the mothership.

Thanks for the input.

Be sure you have or replace the mainspring with the correct one. The rimfire revolvers use a mainspring that is red in color. The centerfire mainsprings are silver, and are a lighter strength. They will interchange, but the silver spring is not as strong as the red one.

A new stock S&W spring is on it's way. We'll see if that fixes wagwan's problem. If not, the trouble shooting will continue.

While your waiting for the spring remove the grips and soak it in solvent. There maybe some goo or debris in with the firing pin

Made good progress today with a shim under the hammer spring. It fired well until it got dirty. I think the stronger red spring mentioned by retired2006 might be the ticket. It is rated at 12lbs vs 8.5lbs for the original.

Installed the red 12lb spring today and tested it. Problem solved - no more light strikes! Thanks for the suggestions.
