Looking to replace the cylinder stop on one of the 3” model 10’s I picked up last year.

Looking on line I see about 3 different companies that sell them.

Do you have a favorite go to place for such item?

The best place to source a new cylinder stop would be S&W parts department, IMO. Ball width is approx. .100".

Is there too much play or gauge in the stop, or is the stop not holding? If it is not holding properly, inadequate stop spring tension can sometimes be an issue. You might check to see that the stop slots in the cylinder are clean, and that the current stop is rising high enough into the cylinder slots to hold properly.

Added: S&W MIM stops are part #21508. The oversized cyl. stops are now listed as "obsolete". (like some of us )

The other alternative would be the Power Custom oversized cylinder stop. They are very high quality, but the issue with them is they are oversized in almost every dimension, not just the width of the ball. This makes them more difficult to fit. I have seen them so wide, in fact, that the ball would not pass through the frame slot. The ball width of these stops is usually over .110" in my experience.

Whichever part you choose, it will likely need fitting to the gun to work properly.

I’ll give S&W a call tomorrow and order a blued one.

I tried just replacing the original one with a new standard one along with a new spring.

Not much improvement so I figured I’d invest in an oversized one.

I read stories on line of folks who purchased ones from other places other than S&W.

Having never replaced one with oversized one hopefully the fitting will be minimal…but not being an expert will definitely have me scratching my head.

I’ll report how things go once new part is received.

Good way to learn how to do it, is doing it yourself. Pretty low risk job to try, good luck. That head scratching is good, it keeps the brain cells stirred up.

I replaced one once on a worn cheap Victory model. The top of the ball was worn down. I got one online as a standard part, not one that needed fitting. There is a little rotary play in the cylinder but not excessive because the ball part is not super snug in the frame opening but it has not caused trouble. I would not think an oversized ball would be too much work to stone down to fit the notches correctly. I always polish the top of the ball on all mine to reduce marking the cylinder.

Be careful fitting you can throw off your cylinder to bore alignment if you have to remove material from one side or the other or maybe even amounts on both sides normally both sides is the better way to go. I bought a smith and wesson repair manual and started doing my own actions and they came out great if you have any questions just ask do you have any honing stones ?

Called S&W customer service.
They said they don’t carry either of those part numbers🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

One would think they would carry…they suggested Numrich’s or Jack First.

Any other suggestions from those in the know??

Would like to purchase a S&W but might be buying from others on line.

There is a vendor on ebay that lists a new "oversize" OEM stop for sale. (not auction) The ball measures .103". The listing number is 126299443229.
Also a non-oversized blue one for sale that measures .101", 126083620927

I think if you put that number in the search box, it will bring the correct item up.

The other places I checked are "out of stock". I did not look at Jack First.

I recently bought three cylinder stops from Midway to correct a bit of rotational play in some of my revolvers, a 28-2, 27-2 and 10-5. Midway says they are not manufactured by S&W but are made to factory specs. Not according to my Starrett micrometer. One is .1025, one is .103 and one is .1035. So they are a bit oversize despite being listed as original factory spec. Midway part number is 565292.

Power customs has those parts.

Received the one I purchased on eBay and finally got to replacing yesterday.

Had to stone down the ball width to fit through the frame slot. Did a little on each side until it dropped in from the top.

Gently stoned the top edges of the ball as well.

Put back together and I’d call it a success 👍👍

Minimal head scratching but these fingers just don’t work as well as they used to.
