Default 940 extraction issues

Took my “new to me” 940 no dash to the range. After a couple of cylinders full, extraction became very difficult. In a previous post, it was mentioned that one could hone the cylinder chambers to alleviate this issue. This isn’t something I am confident doing myself. What do I need to know about honing the chambers? My guess is that a competent smith would know how much/little to hone. Please advise.

Well all I can do (since I do not own one) is to state what I have read over the years. When it comes to the M940 some seem to have extraction issues while some do not. Some have honed the cylinder charge holes but since I do not personally have the experience of shooting them afterwards, I don't know how much that helped. I believe Brownell's does sell a hone for the purpose.

BROWNELLS CHAMBER POLISHING HONES

I would start with calling S&W and see what they have to say. If you don't like what they have to offer or say, you could try the hone method - since they are not overly expensive. I am sorry for your woes and hope you get the situation solved.

I love the 940 and PC 940 Special. I own and shoot several of each.

First make sure your chambers are dry. A coating of oil will contribute greatly to cases sticking

If you keep your chambers dry, then a ceramic hone would be my next step. But hone very gradually.

Hone a little then reshoot and re-evaluate

Default If you're going to hone...

If you're going to hone remember what Beldar told us...

You don't have to hone alone.

I have a 940 and 2 other J Frames that have been customized to shoot 9mm as well as .38.

When I was having issues with sticking cases, and at times I could not move the ejector rod, I called TK Customs.

They offered a simple solution. High quality rounds.

I went to Speer Lawman rounds and no more issues with stuck rounds.

Not sure that will work for you but did for me.

Good luck

It might be like the 22 revolvers where they often have undersized chambers from using worn out reamers. My first thing would be to see how a finish reamer fits in the chamber. If it won't easily go in all the way, simply use the reamer to make it the right size. The reamer won't cut the chamber over size if you only go to the right depth.

Seems to be a common problem with the 940 series.

Popular discussion issue when they were introduced. A cylinder hone was circulating around various members in an attempt to resolve the issue.

I was a participant in that effort. Never fully resolved the issue. Honing helped but was still sticky. Some brands of ammo worse than others.

Pretty sure that’s why the model was discontinued.

Follow up;
I still consider it a good self-defense revolver or as a back up.
But, I wouldn’t count on it for a quick reload.

My 940-1 and 940 no dash had very sticky chambers.
I used a fly hone with fine emery cloth to CAREFULLY
smooth the walls. Worked great.

Sadly both were lost in the Boating Accident of 2018.

I took my 940 to a gun smith. I sent six loaded moon clips so he can test after honing. Estimate is $60 to have him hone the cylinder chambers. I would most definitely mess it up if I tried to do it myself. Repair is still about 3 weeks out. He is booked.

Baby is coming home Saturday. Called after the first week because I wasn’t given an estimated time frame. Was told that it would probably be three more weeks due to backlog. That was last week. Received a call today saying that it was ready to be picked up.
