Default Best place to sell parts....eBay??

Hello all, I am sorting through my many small parts boxes and finding a few S&W items.....some that are damaged and in need of repair such as hammers and a few from antique S&W's including a hammer for an American model.

Anyway, a batch of misc. stuff to liquidate.

I am thinking eBay is the best place since I have been selling off old sights for Winchesters, Marlins, etc. and so far had good luck.

It seems that a lot of us scan eBay when we are in search of a specific items or part.....I know I do.

If there are other outlets you might suggest please let me know?

If you have experience already, then stick to fleabay.
Keep your annual sales below $600 to avoid taxes.
Open a second account via a close person.

Ya can't beat the ad exposure.
"No refunds,no returns" repeated multiple times and you are golden!

What about right here on the forum?

It's a good way to avoid the middleman, and all the extra expenses for both buyer and seller.

The issue is that I have no idea on the true value of the items

And I am pretty sure that I cannot post a link to an eBay auction on the forum

FWIW: I agree with the ebay recommendation. I will point out that the "No refunds - no returns" does not apply to defective items.
I recently purchased set of reloading dies that seemed like they had been polished with 80 grit sand paper. I got a prompt refund despite a "no returns" policy.
I will also point out that many ebay purchasers (including me) are hyper picky about descriptions and conditions. I always minimize my description of the condition of the items I sell. Consequently I've never had a return and several people have said the items were "better than described".

I have been on eBay for many years with nearly 800 sales/purchases and 100% positive feedback.

Yes, there are bad apples out there and I agree you need to be completely transparent with what you are sellling by provide many good photos from all angles and a brief, but clear description.

And if you don't know all the details be upfront about it....state that you are not sure if the item is complete or missing parts, etc.

Then the buyer has to do his/her homework and determine if he/she wants to buy the item.

It's not that hard to do this....and yes, the $600 ceiling for a 1099-K stinks!

I have sold many gun parts on Gunbroker. The sales commission on Gunbroker is lower than eBay.

eBay fees are ridiculous compared to GB....and NO 1099 to deal with at the end of the year.

However I still find that for the smaller non-firearm stuff, eBay has a huge following.

You might want to check the 1099-K threshold for 2024 sales on eBay. As I understand it, the amount has been changed to $5,000 in order to allow a “phase in” of the new $600 requirement, which will take effect in 2025.

I saw that they used to be $20,000 and were going to phase in the $600 number.....

Here’s the information from the IRS website…

IRS announces 2023 Form 1099-K reporting threshold delay for third party platform payments; plans for a $5,000 threshold in 2024 to phase in implementation | Internal Revenue Service.

I wonder how this will affect those selling on all the other sites??
Like Gun Broker, and all the other gun selling sites??
Especially those who are private sellers.

Hard to say how many firearms related sellers will stay with eBay once the 1099's start rolling out. Most of those I know are going to Gunbroker as the fee structure is better on GB and eBay has parts restrictions.

Only problem with Gunbroker is their search function for parts is terrible.

I used to sell on e-bay until 2023 when they were going to 1099 everyone over $600.00, so I only sold one item for about $350.00. I didn't find out until December that they were holding off of the 1099 for a while and that was too late for me to sell much more in that year. I am now going to sell about 5K worth of stuff this year and then be done with them. Their fees along with 1099 taxes makes it not worth selling there any longer for me.

It's interesting.........In the last few weeks I have put up nearly 100 auctions on "EvilBay" and will sell just under the $5,000 before I quit

I had an auction of misc. parts listed and had been listed for several days with several bids.....nothing that eBay forbids you to list.....suddenly two of my "Parts" auctions got pulled by the eBay Nazi Youth......nothing specified as being illegal, and nothing that I could see that was not allowed.

So....I will relist and see how it goes this time around.....

THREEDFLYER, before you re-list those items on ebay you may want to reconsider rewriting your text or change the order of the pictures. Not necessarily re shooting those photos just change the order, all so that you can fly under the radar on the first pass.
Even if you see nothing "offensive" to their ad police some slight changes may be the trick to evade their scrutiny

I did just that, changed the title and descriptions and took new photos.....will relist this evening and see if they let the auctions run their course or smack me down again. NOTHING was prohibited.....my guess is a spybot they have or some pinhead kid looking at auctions.

Stay tuned!

I signed up on GI a while back and have only listed two guns there....did not end up selling them, but I was impatient and moved them to GB.

Will give GI another go, you can't beat a flat $18 fee and no hidden taxes, etc.

The true value of an item is what another is willing to pay. The best way to go about selling old parts is to price them what you are willing to take. To many times people think auction will bring big bucks, only to have item sell for peanuts.
Look on eBay at parts that are up for bid. Many don’t get a bid.
Which means owners reserve is to high and that along with shipping and sales tax makes it a deal killer.
