Default How to refinish rear sight on Md 317

I had to do some very minor filing on the rear sight of my Md 317 to remove burrs that were scratching my arm while I was out in the field. There is some in-the-white metal that I temporarily covered with a black permanent marker. I'd rather do it right and make a proper repair. I saw a recommendation on another thread for a product from Brownell's, but it's expensive for this one use. Any suggestions for getting that black finish?

Thanks
Chris

Nothing is cheap these days and cold blue is not likely to provide the black-blue of a hot dip black oxide finish. Oxpho-Blue is a good cold blue product and the creme version is very easy to apply. Make sure you remove all oils, grease, wax from the sight, then apply a little heat to the sight to drive moisture off of the metal before applying the cold blue. If you don't want to do that, then maybe some matte black enamel hobby paint.

Brownells T4 does a good job also and, IIRC, is more of a black than a blue.

Dicropan (sp) is a commercial steel blackening product, but yes it's costly. OTOH, a bottle lasts years, maybe decades, even if you use it to finish a couple of gun barrels. I believe I bought my bottle in the last century and it still works. Do have to order another though one of these days.

I use Birchwood Casey flat black touch up pen on my sights that need help . If your lgs don’t have any you can usually paint pens at the local craft hobby store . Testers model paint is another inexpensive option. If you use testers I would recommend a toothpick to apply by rolling it along the edge because a brush canbe messy. Either way it’ll holdup for quite a while and is easy to redo.

I decided to go with the BC pen. I ordered one from Amazon as my LGS is almost an hour away. I appreciate all the information provided.
