To check for bent rod, remove rod & lay on a flat surface like glass or mirror and it will show right away. All rods have a little movement and may not be bent. As for the locking problem, if the rod is tight (turn counterclockwise), then the rod may be slightly too long. Take a SMALL amount off the end of the rod until it opens and closes like it should. You don't need much, go easy. Excess end play will also allow the cylinder to move fwd and cause locking problems.
