Well Boys, the thing came together yesterday...crowned & cut forcing cone to 11 degrees.
Fitted re-bored barrel, checked the gap and headspace, timing and carry-up was good, as was the range rod check.

Just centered up adjustable rear sight...First shot dead-on at 50 feet off sandbags-SA, next four same...Big smile from me!

This 'n will be going to the engraver's shop by end of summmer.

Doing a search of my roll top desk, came up with a new 45 ACP cylinder, so here we go.
Checked 'er out for head space and cyl. gap, filed and stoned ratchet, timing great.

So without further ado,
50' off'n the bags.

Last shot I pulled high. Smiling so big, caused me to close me eyes!

That's gonna be a mighty nice rig. Shootin' ain't too bad either.

Be interested in the engraving results when you get it back.

What model did you start with for the conversion?

Had a pre-model number Highway Patrolman that I like pretty well, so...I 've been missing my first 45 LC Smith for about 20 years.
It was a 5" and a real shooter too.

My partner in the outfittin' business took a likin' to it and seeings how he was like a brother and all. Gave it to him as a gift.

Last year got a 3 1/2" 27 barrel off IBSandy and a cylinder chambered for the long colt cartridge off'n BAscrambler.
Had the barrel re-bored and rifled out in Washington state.

Got it all together and shuzzam! Got a S&W in 45 Long Colt...

Now what was it you ask me?

Su Amigo,
Dave

Thanks for the update. Sir, you are an example of a fine American. Take something you have, and with some effort, turn it into what you want.

I certainly enjoy my 625 MG in 45 Colt. It is my favorite.

What a great project! I'll be looking forward to the finished product. If it's to be anything like your previous custom guns, I'll be impressed all over again.

Thanks,

Jerry

Very nice rig! Could I ask who (in WA State) did the barrel work?

I have a .45 Colt / 625-6 MG that is a great shooter, but there is something about your conversion that sorta... speaks to me.

Again, congrats on the keeper!

When you switch cylinders, what do you do about the frame lug?

Sir,

Haven't done anything to the frame lug yet.
I'll make a new one and install it prior to having it refinished.

The LC cylinder dosen't slap back and forth to much, but the ACP cyl. has more rearward movement.

I like to get them fitted up and see if they'll shoot before altering the frame. Sometimes I'll re-chamber the recessed 27 or 28 cylinders and don't have to replace the lug.

Or if I'm gonna use the longer OAL cast bullets in a .45 LC conversion I'll rechamber a recessed 29 cyl. to get more chamber length...If the frame had a recessed cylinder to start with I'm good to go.

In order to make the lug fit and work well with the shorter ACP cylinder, I may have to chamfer or do a hidden step on the longer non-recessed LC cylinder I've used on this one...

Thanks for askin'. You got me to thinking I need to get to work on that.

Su Amigo,
Dave

Smith in 45LC

Hi...I have a neat conversion. ... A 38-44 that has had the cylinder rebored to 45LC. Then a 45LC model 1955 barrel cut down to 4" installed. Top strap grooved for an adjustable WO rear sight, and a Patridge front sight fitted. Pachmayr grips, too. Took .030 off the top of the front sight to bring up the POI. Don't get me wrong....this was no "collector" piece, but what fun to shoot, and a great home defense piece to boot ! BT
