Default S&W 617 - Extra Long Firng Pin

Will the Cylinder & Slide extra long firing pin fit the S&W 617? I would like to lighten the DA trigger pull and have observed that this leads to unreliable ignition with the standard firing pin. I have used the C&S extra long firing pin to provide reliable ignition with lightened DA triggers in CF revolvers.

Since S&W went to all-MIM parts, the firing pins are the same between K/L/N frames (and probably even J-frames). The longer firing pin should work just fine--remember to use snap-caps when dryfiring.

The long firing pin from C&S will reach the chamber rim seat and ding it. The original is usually shorter and won't damage the gun dryfiring. If you only dry fire it with snap caps you will be all right, but I prefer to dry fire empty so I kept the original firing pin and put in a heavier mainspring to ensure ignition while shooting double action.

If you have a MIM 617 it shares a firing pin with the centerfires. The earlier 617's had a different FMFP. Using one of S&W's conical tipped firing pins (most likely what you'll get if you order one but it's potluck) is probably best. You'll find you can't lighten the pull as much as with the center fires. DO NOT lighten or "bob" the hammer, it doesn't work on the rimfires.

Thanks all for your inputs. I'll get an extra long firing pin and give it a try. I never dry fire so if it allows me to slightly lightened the DA pull it will make it worthwhile.

Default Firing pin...

I need the extra long pin due to light primer strikes and failures to fire (a lot) on my BNIB 329NG. Nothing worse than a "click" instead of a .44 mag lighting off.

Pin is coming. Hope to have soon.......

I installed a C&S long firing pin in my model 327 TRR8 and when I compared it with the one that was already in the gun it was the same length, but the cutout for the retaining pin was bigger and allowed the pin to have more travel on hammer strikes. When testing the primers showed a huge amount of depression where the firing pin struck where as before it was sort of shallow.

Well they installed a C&S firing pin. If it breaks I'll get an APEX and bring them the part.

Default 617 Long FP

It will work for a while but will exhibit compression fracture. I lighten 617's but cannot get to CF revolvers. I also have bobbed the hammer w/o problems. Each if different but I have 4 Apex firing pins w/springs f/s as I prefer CL for my CF revolvers.

You can get some extra travel with the stock pin by widening the slot.

C&S firing pin working fine (so far) with light .44 sp and hot .44 mag loads. I will order a couple of the APEX pins to keep as spares. I often carry this firearm so I need it to be totally reliable. Sure is fun to fire with the hot stuff!
