    41 Field Barrel

The 5” field barrel was discontinued in the mid 1980’s but S&W didn’t drill & tap model 41 barrels until 1994. If a field barrel is drilled, it was not done at S&W.

    Completed my set

Congratulations Rick. You now have an example of every 4” stainless steel J frame revolver that Smith & Wesson has ever produced! I’ve got the same set & can’t decide which is my favorite. The 63 gets shot the most but I’m a big fan of anything 32 caliber. I liked the combat grips on the 631 so...

    Circa 1960 M41 box?

Aussie Collector is correct. The box is a 1958 based on the serial number on the bottom but the parts list is incorrect because it shows the 5 1/2” Heavy Barrel that wasn’t introduced until August 1963. The barrel length is not on the box because in 1958 the only barrel available was the 7 3/8”...

    Nice pre-Model 31 nickel

The quick and easy way to tell the difference between the I & J frame is to measure the length of the cylinder. The I frame is 1.25” and the longer J frame is 1.40”. It’s a little hard to eyeball the difference but if you put them side by side, it’s obvious. My model 31 is identical to yours...

Help needed for dating Model 41

Smith & Wesson did not manufacture or ship its arms in serial number order so dating by serial number order is the least reliable method to use. Here are several shipping dates in the 94k range for model 41’s in my database: 94036 June 67 94322 July 67 94586 March 68 94672 Sept 67 94999 April...

Have you gotten your SNAP card scam text yet?

I’ve had several texts from “Fed Ex” and “UPS” concerning delivery problems with my package. Since I haven’t ordered anything, I don’t respond.

Model 41 and tuning springs? (Wolff)

There is only one OEM recoil spring reguardless of which barrel is used on the model 41. This spring drives the slide and since the barrel is locked to the frame, the spring has no effect on the barrel no matter the length or weight. Some do use a lighter spring to “cure” extraction problems...

    I frame 32 identity?

I have #636070 that was shipped in April 1956. It is a 32 Regulation Police model of 1953 new I frame 4 screw to give you it’s full name. The Hand Ejectors and RP’s shared the same block of serial numbers so yours would have shipped after mine but before model numbers were assigned in 1957...

    New to me M46

Big Larry, Model 46 #73080 was shipped in March 1965 Model 46 #73441 was shipped in June 1965 Most likely yours dates to this period but Dr. Jinks will give you the ship date when you get to post the question to him. What length barrel came with your model 46?

Can I Please Get a Little Help on a Model 46

The model 46 was introduced in 1959 as a lower cost version of the model 41. Obvious differences were the plastic grips and the lower amount of polishing. Other changes deleted the cocking indicator and compensator, lack of knurling on the safety & slide release, and some other cost cutting...

    9mm 124 Ball/fmj best OAL

What Luke Duke said! Given the many bullet profiles in the same weight, small variations in chamber dimensions, and magazine differences, this is how to best determine the optimum over all length for your pistol. But as he has said, reducing the internal volume by deeper seating will rapidly...

Model 41 factory lead lapped barrel

Model 41 barrels were lead lapped until 1968 when the practice was discontinued presumably as a cost cutting decision.

    32 Hand Ejector 1903, 1st change

I saw this revolver in a local gun store today. Nickel 3 1/4” barrel #39169 with a five point star at the end of the serial number. What is the significance of the star? I don’t recall seeing this before & I’m not well versed on the early hand ejectors. Hopefully the picture let you see what I’m...

    Fitting 7" barrel

I’ve owned several 41’s and have had several spare barrels over a few years and they all have interchanged without any problems at all. If you do have a problem with the new barrel, give us a call for help. But I don’t think it will happen.

    Model 41

With the warning that S&W did not assemble or ship in serial number order, your M41 is a 1963 model. The nearest on my list are: #43492 Oct 1963 #45105 Sep 1963 As you can see, the higher numbered pistol shipped first. I agree with Chief, the grips are not very left hand friendly.

    Model 41

That’s a beautiful inheritance. From what I can see, it looks like an early 60’s model 41 probably with a five digit serial number. If you willing to post the number, we can date it a little closer for you. The model 41 is a true joy to shoot. Mine works very well with CCI-SV. The only...

    32 HE....I did it again

It look identical to mine except mine is blue steel. I’ve been told that the full name is “Smith and Wesson 32 Regulation Police Model of 1953 new I frame, four screw” I have #636070 from April 1956 which makes it towards the end of the four screw models. The frame, yoke, barrel, cylinder...
