    Another 16-4

S&W did not produce or ship their products in serial number order so dating by number is an educated guess. That said, here are a few with shipping dates: BHS9346 January 92 BHS9468 January 95 (122 digits apart but 3 years apart shipping) BET8960 March 90 BET9323 March 90 My 16-4 works best...

    Picked up a model 41

Paul a bit of history, In 1992 S&W suspended production of the M41 when the factory was moved to Maine. Production was resumed at the new facility in 1994 as what we call the “new model” whose safety did not lock the slide when engaged. Your M41 has the older safety with the tab that fits in...

63 kit gun pinned barrel - date help?

I really liked the S&W combat grips that came on my model 631 (top) so I started putting them on my other J frames like the model 63 on the bottom. Fortunately, this was done before the cost of combat grips went through the roof! The targets are very nice and hand filling of an adult as well.

    Model 325 Thunder Ranch 45acp

The cases do not clear the cylinder. However I’ve never had any problems with ejection when using moon clips. New, the Thunder Ranch came with a carry case, several moon clips, a top rail to replace the rear sight, and an under barrel rail for a light, laser, bayonet, etc. I’d keep that in mind...

I frame vs Improved I frame

This is my 32 Regulation Police model of 1953 New I frame 4 screw that left the factory in April 1956. When the 4th side plate screw was deleted, soon after mine was shipped, it became what we call the “Pre model 31”. Except for the square frame, it is identical to the 32 Hand Ejector series we...

My 31-1, serial number H28354 was shipped in October 1970. Hope this helps.

red dot mounting on a Model 41

The model 41 is drilled & taped for a Weaver #62 base. I tried to measure the distance from the bottom of the red dot to the top of the barrel on my model 41 but I had a problem because I didn’t want the calipers to scratch up my pistol. My best guess is about 0.2 inches. I hope this helps.

    Selecting One Rimfire Brand

From a cost benefit basis, the CCI-SV is a very good pick. Can you get more accurate 22lr? Yes but a much higher price. Cheaper ammunition can be found but at a cost of accuracy and reliability. Like others, I’ve found it to be a very good ammunition for several of my 22lr rifles and pistols...

    Cleaning Patches

My uncle Sam gave me plenty of 22 patches back when I worked for him. I’m still using them today.

    32 fun at the range

It best to only make one change at a time. I’ll most likely try a lighter rebound spring next and see how that goes. In the meantime, Ive got some reloading to finish.

    32 fun at the range

Tuesday evening I installed a 7.5lb hammer spring in my 632 Pro. It really felt light and smooth when I dry fired it. The next morning I’m off to the range to see if it worked. It didn’t. Not a big surprise at all. Back home, I pulled the spring and started to put the original spring back in...

    Heavy Clothing Stops .38 Wadcutter!

My first problem is this is a sample of one. I’d like to see if this is an aberration or is it typical behavior for the wadcutter. Next by my count, this was shot through 14 layers which I think is excessive even for winter clothing in Montana. Two layers of cotton sweatshirt, two of poly...

610 light primer strikes, have installed springs and new pin, still not firing

One spring works - the other does not. Use the one that works.

    Number of Model 631s?

Frogie, The SCSW Vol5 states that “Production about 5,474” for the model 631 but does not break down that total by the three versions of that model except they note that only 190 of the 631 with the 2 inch barrel and fixed sights were made. No idea of how many Ladysmiths versus the 4” target...

    Model 41 conundrum

A model 41-1 can be converted to a standard model 41 by replacing five parts. A 22lr barrel, steel slide assembly, standard recoil spring, ejector, and a 22lr magazine are all that’s required. S&W did offer a conversion kit to change a 41 to a dash 1 consisting of the same five parts but for the...

    Model 41 Spring Wt?

If you live close enough I would be happy to meet and let you try my 41 barrel to see if it functioned OK on your frame. If that combo worked, we know you had a problem with the barrel. If it jammed with my barrel, we could swap springs to see if that solved the problem. Do you know another...

    Model 41 5" Field barrel

Ken, The field barrel was authorized by Smith & Wesson on May 8, 1959 with the first shipped on September 2, 1959, These were available as a complete pistol or as an accessory for an existing model 41. There were several production runs over the years where barrels were made and stocked in...

S&W 41 extra stamp on the frame

I must agree with everyone else that it is a desiccation of a fine pistol to do something like that. If LK had to do this, why didn’t he at lease stamp his initials on the frame under the stocks where they wouldn’t be so glaringly obvious! Chief38 has it right. This is the only model 41 ever...

    32 S&W long test results:

I also have a 4” model 31-1. The best load to date is with the Hornady 90 grain LSWC driven by 2.0 grains of Vihtavuori N310 powder and a CCI-500 primer. This load yields about 793 fps with a standard deviation of 14 with very good accuracy and clean burning as well. This is my go to load for...

    Smith and Wesson 16-4

My favorite caliber are the various 32’s. I can say that because I have more 32’s than any other caliber so I’m a bit prejudiced. With that said, my 16-4 is the best of the lot. It’s not the best for concealed carry but is the most fun to shoot of the whole bunch. Even with hot loads, the weight...
