    Red ramps ............now what?

BorderPatrol, I'm having the same problem. My 686 has the integral ramp; no pin. One solution might be a barrel change. Midway has 4" barrels for 106.00 with the pinned front sight. With that you could swap out your sights, front and rear for Meprolights 3 dot night sights (85.00 for the set.)...

    686-5 with 5" full-lugged barrel

Tell me more about the 5". I'm planning to rebarrel my 6" modified no-dash. The 5" sounds like a perfect compromise. I was thinking about going to a 4" "620" bbl or a full lug 4" as an all-around gun since the 6" is feeling a little bbl. heavy these days.

    686 Problem Part II

Howdy, Boomer. This recall is 30 yrs old for original 686 No Dash guns. To their credit S&W handles it all for free. They send you a prepaid label by email and you ship it by FED EX. You should contact their Customer Service Dept. about recalls. Better yet you might post a question in a couple...

    Wheel weight score!

I was striking out at tire shops so I went to the local scrap yard. When I asked for wheelweights they lead me to a 55 gallon barrel full. I got 42 pounds for $14.00. I spent an evening making ingots and I'm heading back for another load. BTW if you fill a 5 gallon bucket you've got a hernia in...

I must be crazy! (.45-70 story)

.45/70 I shoot a Marlin 1895CB and a Uberti- Winchester 1885 High Wall. I'll be trying for another whitetail this wknd. with the Marlin. I settled on 1400-1512 fps whether its the Rem 405 JSP or my hard cast 405 FN. It's all the recoil I care to deal with. A long day at the range brings out...

    686 Problem Part II

I thought I'd live with my 686 until I put together a hot H 110 load and there was the primer flow I'd read about here. So, I sent it in last month and a week later it was back. I went straight to the range and finished off the box of shells that caused the problem. They shot just fine. No hang...

    I need help understanding bullets

The nose doesn't matter. Go by the weight and whether jacketed or lead. If the velocity isn't too fast you can use the same data either way but keep in mind that often times a lead bullet will move faster than the same weight jacketed bullet. Hope this helps. Welcome aboard.

    Powder for loading .40 S&W

I'm partial to Power Pistol. Regardless of the bullet weight you'll get good results. It meters well and you can download for "40 Lite" practice rounds. Blue Dot does a good job on many loads, too. Start at the minimum load and go from there. I've gotten some great groups with 6.0 gr Power...

    Missouri Bullet Company

+1 for me as well. I like knowing the hardness of my bullets. The others only make hard cast which is good for some loads but not all. The service is great and shipping is super fast. Did I mention the price? 500-158 SWC $38.85 delivered.

    140 gr Bullets for .357

I ran a comparison of two loads today. 11.6 Blue Dot w/ CCI SPM. And, 11.7 Blue Dot w/ WSP primers. The group with the magnum primers opened up to 3.5" at 25 yds. The standard primer load tightened up to 2" and less. The primers were all normal on both loads like the far right case above. I'm...

    140 gr Bullets for .357

Here's a pic of WSPM primers from a batch of 12.4 Blue Dot, 140 Rem. JHP. The three on the right flattened and the 2 on left came out normal. BD doesn't meter the best. Maybe that's the reason for different pressure levels. Are the three on the right are in acceptable range of deformation?

    140 gr Bullets for .357

I think we met one day at the Staples Range. You had a neat 686 2.5" w/ night sights? I'd enjoy getting together to try different loads. I'll send an email. I've never used either one of those powders. Another one I've tried is H4227. It's a pleasent load to shoot and accurate but I'm not sure...

    140 gr Bullets for .357

I hear you about the 12gr Blue Dot. If it ain't broke, why fix it? It's those flattened primers that worried me. Win. WSP are the worst. What primer are you using?

    140 gr Bullets for .357

I got started reloading with Hornady #4 back in 1991. It steered me to the 140gr. bullet and Blue Dot and The Sierra book from those days listed 12.4 Blue Dot as the accuracy load. The 140 is a great compromise between speed and accuracy and though hot it shot some of the tightest groups I ever...

    I've got brag a little

You still have bragging rights, IMHO. I've never tried paper at 100 yds w/ my 686 but I do have a good time shooting at clay pidgeons. Nice shooting. Sunkist

    Primer question

I asked the same question recently. I got an answer from an experienced reloader that used the load in question successfully for over 30 years. The loads were minimal- no problem. Then I went back to my Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook for .357 loads and realized that all the loads used CCI 550 aka...
