New model 41 Performance edition FTFire

It sounds like the slide is not going fully into battery or the extractor is not going over the rim. The rounds that work might be a little smaller in diameter allowing the extractor to slide over them. It could be something like what Yendor357 described that you could fix yourself and avoid...

    Model 41 Dry Fire

I did buy a set of Wolff springs a few years ago and read your posts about what happens if you install them backwards. Those posts probably saved me from having a big problem, thanks! Before buying the springs I bought a big stockpile of MinMag and Blazer ammo I am still using. My 41 is a bit...

Smith & Wesson bringing back no internal lock revolvers for 2024?

My 22 M&P Compact has the lock along with a magazine disconnect, neither of which is on the other M&P pistols. Always seemed like a way for new shooters to learn the bad habit of relying on safeties not present on M&Ps in other calibers.

    Model 69 Musings

+1 on the grips Hogue makes for the X frame revolvers. They fit all round butt K, L and N frame revolvers too and work very well. The only downside is that they are bulky but you can sand them down if you find them too large. I like the way they feel in my hands so much I put them on my 686...

Just curious uf you lose some accuracy shooting 38's out of a 357.

No, I never owned a Ransom rest and used sandbags for a rest. As a result I was never sure if the groups I was getting were limited by the accuracy of the gun and ammo or my shooting ability. The club I shoot at has one now and I think it is attached to one of the concrete benches. But I quit...

What in the wide world of sports is going on here

Need and want are two different things. If someone wants a new cartridge for some small advantage nothing wrong with that. I was hoping the 30 SC would catch on for the increased capacity but it didn't happen. But I totally get how frustrating it can be when things get needlessly complicated...

Just curious uf you lose some accuracy shooting 38's out of a 357.

How large were the groups at 25 and 50 yards? I use a rest on occasion but still have to line up the iron sights after every shot which limits accuracy. When I was reloading and trying to find the most accurate load for my 610 the best I could ever do was about 1.5 to 1.8 inches at 25 yards...

Just curious uf you lose some accuracy shooting 38's out of a 357.

How often do you find a handgun that will shoot accurately at 25 feet but is inaccurate at 50 yards? Unless you are so close the bullets are going into one ragged hole shooting small targets at close distance is every bit as good as shooting large targets at long distance for evaluating...

Just curious uf you lose some accuracy shooting 38's out of a 357.

Not that I have noticed but I have shot a lot more 38s out of 357 revolvers than 38 revolvers. There is enough variation in accuracy gun to gun than that it is hard to tell. If a 38 revolver shoots your favorite 148 grain wadcutter more accurately is it because it was specifically built for...

M&P 2.0 competor making red dot lens dirty.

I have the same problem on my OR Compact but decided cleaning the optic as a part of my normal gun cleaning after a range trip made more sense. But I did save a link to the plate when I saw it mentioned here. It is made by a company called Calculated Kinetics. Never bought the plate so I...

Given my interest in obsolete calibers I'm considering the 30 Super Carry

Take extra care if you start reloading 30 SC. Its a 52,000 PSI cartridge with a case that holds 5 or 6 grains of powder so small errors in the charge weight or seating depth could have greater consequences than normal.

    Model 41 ammo recommendation

Will they? I have seen some budget bulk 22 ammo that had 2 or 3 misfires per 50 round box. That kind of misfire rate is unusually high, even with budget ammo, but can happen.

    Model 41 ammo recommendation

CCI standard velocity is the place to start. It is reliable and accurate out of the majority M41s. But if it is unreliable you may have to look elsewhere or start messing with your gun. My 41 fails to completely eject the casing about once or twice per 50 round box with standard velocity...

Shooting a pistol after a few years

I would shoot it as is to verify it would have worked if you had needed to use it today. It would be very surprising if a M&P failed just because it has been sitting around for few years. Exception to shooting it as is would be if there is a chance the bore is obstructed.

    Mod 41

I bought mine in the mid-90s and it locked up during its first trip to the range. The slide was stuck and could not be pulled back. Which is rare with the factory recoil spring but not impossible. Somewhere between slim and none was my gun. The factory fixed it under warranty. Its always...

Is the hottest ammo the best ammo?

I am thinking MOA so a 4 inch group at 25 yards is the same as a 2 inch group at 12.5 yards. There might be a small difference in elevation due to the distance between the bore and the sights. But other than that if you can hit a 3 inch target at 12 yards you can hit a 6 inch target at 25...

Is the hottest ammo the best ammo?

What's the advantage of shooting at 25 yards? Most often I shoot at 12 yards. Because the range I most often go to at the gun club has steel plates at that distance with a berm a couple of yards behind the rack of plates. Its more convenient to shoot paper targets at the same range than...

Is the hottest ammo the best ammo?

From reading the various gun fora and watch videos on YouTube you would think best ammo is always the hottest ammo. That a 38 +P loaded so hot it matches the ballistics some of the weaker .357 ammo is a good choice for lightweight revolver chambered in 38 +P. That the only 10mm ammo worth...

    ?Quick Primer on S&W .22s?

I have a S&W 41, 617 and 22 Compact. The 41 is a fantastic shooter but is very fussy about ammo. Mine has about a 3% failure rate with standard velocity ammo of any type even after trying most of the commonly recommended fixes. But it shoots CCI Blazer so well I am no going to sell it. A bit...

Age bracket recent .44 mag buyers

Most of the younger shooters that want a powerful handgun think 10mm these days. I have tried to tell them a 44 fires heavier bullets, has significantly more power and doesn't have the reliability issues many 10mm handguns have with hot ammo but none of that matters. If its not semiauto they...
