38 SPL SPEER Gold Dot 135gr JHP +P Review

Yes, another great NYPD load! Lessons finally learned unfortunately. Remember before the 124 gr +P Speer Gold Dot, standard duty issue was WW 115 gr ball! Nuts!

38 SPL BUFFALO BORE 158gr SWC +P Review

I got similar performance, albeit slightly faster, in my longer 4 5/8 inch BH with .004” BC gap. Great woods load or around here for self protection in our high desert.

38 SPL FEDERAL PUNCH 120gr JHP +P Review

Excellent tests…surprised by its lackluster performance in the snub nose.

Loading jacketed bullets - tip for some

…I finally took my calipers to check the Winchester 110 gr JHP ‘s noted to be .357. NONE (20 checked) measured .357…most were .356 and few .355! There’s partially the problem. Not only that the cannelures position differed with many bullets. What happened to quality control with Winchester…

Loading jacketed bullets - tip for some

…who knows about Lee nowadays…I just purchased a NOE plug .358x.354 moments ago… Cast/lead bullets are so much easier…

Loading jacketed bullets - tip for some

Yonder, I’ve been chronographing as long as most are old around here. Please reread my initial post. But thanks for your post regardless.

Loading jacketed bullets - tip for some

Forrestr, always appreciate your thoughtful and detailed responses. You definitely earned a PhD in reloading my friend! I’m always learning even at my age thanks to you and others here, thank you! I liked your quote here which confirms my workaround fix to the lighter bullet problem: “This...

    357. 125gr LRNFP Question

I also prefer to use the crimping groove. Lyman uses a similar weight 125 gr cast bullet in 38 Special using 5.2 grs W231 (same as HP38), 1.440” oal…+P pressure 18,300 psi. Your load should be good to go in your 357 Magnum.

Loading jacketed bullets - tip for some

I’ve been reloading cast and lead bullets for my revolvers since Nixon was President. Rarely did I reload jacketed projectiles for handguns. I’ve been reloading recently 38 Spl +P 110 gr JHPs (Winchester) and with this lighter bullet was getting unacceptable wider extremes…could even detect...

    flame cutting

I’d recommend VV powders, N110 or N350 …single base powders burn “cooler.”

    Reloading 38 Spl +P 110 gr JHP

I picked up some Winchester 110 gr JHP’s and plan on loading 38 Special +P and 357 Magnum (1200 fps loading) 110 gr JHP factory equivalent loads. Appreciate any suggestions and experiences loading the 110 gr JHP in 38/357. I have Power Pistol, Unique, W231 and Accurate #5 powder and CCI-500...

Federal’s latest FBI Load for Airweights

I contacted Federal and spoke with one of their Engineers in MN facility (where they produce 38G). He advised that they do not use an adhesive inside the case to help secure the lead bullet. He also advised that putting a 1/2 turn crimp on the cartridges with a Lee Carbide Factory Crimp should...

    Had enough? S&W Airweights

I’m getting to the point that shooting my S&W Airweight 38 Spl +P at the range has become too painful in my later years. I took my Ruger SP101 to my shooting location today and it reminded me how nice it is to do range work with a heavier revolver. A S&W Airweight is never a range gun I...

Federal’s latest FBI Load for Airweights

Prefer them in 4” barrels K frames. If I can find some Speer 38 Spl +P 135 gr Golds Dots that would be the way to go. Most of the time I have my generic range load…148 gr DEWC over 3.3 grs W231…693 fps in the 442

    Outdoorsman/heavy duty/38/44, which one?

Congratulations, it’s a S&W Outdoorsman. (You want a corresponding load equal +/- to post war 38 Special high velocity rounds? Recommend 6.0 grs Power Pistol and Speer 158 gr RNL and CCI-500 primers (this is a Speer load and falls within +P specs). It should clock slightly over 1,000 fps in...

Federal’s latest FBI Load for Airweights

I recently purchased a couple of boxes of Federal’s LE 38 Special +P 158 gr LSWCHP (“38G”). There are many out there nowadays at good prices (less than round nose std velocity…checkout Recoil Gunworks for instance). The Federal crimp is not too pronounced as Remington’s current FBI...
