    Problem with 357 Magnum trr8

    That’s ideal according to S&W. The spec is .004 - .010.

    Win. 231 .38 Special loads

…why start another thread on the subject…pls forgive me for continuing it. I have a friend with a used but still tight +P rated S&W Model 67 and he wants to start reloading for it. I recommended purchasing W231, Winchester primers along with 158 gr cast SWCs and 148 gr cast DEWCs (Missouri...

    38 Special Keith SWC loads

    I use 4.8 grs Unique with 170 gr 358429 Lyman 2 alloy myself…avg 925 fps from my 4 5/8” Ruger BH…but it’s considered a +P nowadays…go figure. It’s accurate. I keep it out of my K and J frames… …

What are your favorite 38 Special standard velocity loads using Keith type SWCs (170 grs +/-)? Powder? Grains? Primers? Appreciate your inputs. Best, Eric

Cool round…wish it was adapted to lever actions as a Model 92.

    Lightweight bullets in Model 19's

My S&W HDs never see high velocity jacketed bullets in any weight...but that’s me. I always prefer lead…and with my HD’s, at 38 Spl +P velocities in accordance with either Lyman or Speer current data.

Underwood 38 Special Wadcutter very short review

Just pickup a factory box of 148 gr wadcutter loads…my preference are the Remington variety. (…if you reload, 3.5grs Bullseye under a 148 gr cast DEWC (NOT swaged HBWC) for a full wadcutter load. Nowadays, I use 3.3 grs W231 with the 148 gr DEWC…pretty much duplicates standard factory...

    Lead vapor???

If it is an older 586 (not today’s version which bluing is prone to damage from ammoniated solvents)…I would get some Otis bronze brushes…moisten with Hoppes 9 and scrub away… it goes away fairly quickly particularly, if you let the Hoppes 9 stay on it overnight. Hoppes Elite Gun cleaner is...

    W-W Treasury ammo?

…suggest you shoot them in your L and N frames not early 38 Spl K frames if you don’t have to. The original 38-44 loads (158 gr and 1,125 fps) were reduced after WW2 closer to levels found in +P versions…regardless of what we hear in internet lore. S&W recommends no +P usage in your early 38...

    Break Free Problem

I use Slip 2000 Gun Lube and Breakfree CLP interchangeably. Breakfree is no longer on USG Qualified Parts List…USG changed CLP spec to Bio only CLPs and Breakfree have yet to develop a Bio CLP for USG submission approval. G96 Bio CLP is on the USG QPL. G96 Bio CLP cleans pretty well

Anyone here subscribe to Load data.com???

I just pickup the appropriate back issues of Handloader where they test and list loads for 38 Spl, 38 Spl +P, 38-44 and 357 Magnum. I’ve found you can search and locate a lot of load data for the calibers I listed on line…published ones in fact, including Speer.

The beat goes on…S&W 4” comparison

Checking my records, I did test Federal’s 38G +P FBI load in my S&W HD 4 inch last month. This revolver has a barrel to cylinder gap of .004 is generally very generous in the velocity department even outpacing my 5 in version with same gap. Regardless, the Federal FBI load in my 4 inch is...

    Lament

I have some left…you can replace it with BE-86 or Power Pistol which are still available but overly expensive in my opinion. Accurate #5 is also useable in similar applications. N340 is also good in 38 Spl +P and 357 Magnum. Bottom line…you have alternatives to Unique.

    Ahh snow

RIP John McGrath…John was a WW2 MOH (posthumously) recipient 10th Mtn Division. From Norwalk, CT. He was the first 10th Mtn soldier to receive the MOH and was the only one who had until the wars on terror. RIP John. Our families knew one another back there…I wasn’t born yet but recall the...
