Question on MIM, S&W, and Taurus

To be fair to Taurus I suppose I should say that there are some models of Taurus's that are noticably cheaper than their Smith counterparts. The one that comes immediatly to mind is the .357 J frame size revolvers. The Smiths are pretty high in this area although, they do enjoy an impressive...

Question on MIM, S&W, and Taurus

On the J frame size guns there just wasn't enough difference in price to attract me. The Smith 642 or 442 can be had for less than $20 more than the Taurus. Even when comparing the Taurus knock-off version to the Beretta 92 there was only about $65 difference. If the Taurus's were half the...

    Pachmayr vs. Hogue

I have limited experience with the Hogue grips but unquestionably like my Pach's better. Took my Pachmayer Compac's off to try a set of Hogues and did not like them at all. They felt bad in my hand and just had a cheap feel and sound (if that makes sense) to them. I put the Pach's back on...

3rd generation. Steel vs alloy frames.

I have been told that in selecting a 3rd gen Smith that it's better to go with the all steel on a used gun because the alloy frames tended to wear in the slide area because of the steel slide against the softer alloy. Also that down the road if it was decided to refinish the gun it would be a...

Too bad about the grips. Are the stock S&W grips still available.

Can the mag disconnect be left out without effecting any other function?

Sights and grips for 3rd gen auto's

I was wondering if there were either Smith or aftermarket sights available for the gen 3 auto's. I was looking at one for my son and want to know if it's possible to get taller or shorter front sights in the even the pistol is hitting high or low. What about replacing the rear sight with an...

    S&W Model 4506

thanks guys. We're going to go take a look at it in a couple days. At 43 ounces they should handle the .45acp pretty well.

    S&W Model 4506

Does anyone here know where I can find the factory specs on this pistol. Also, if anyone here is familiar with them or better yet has one, I would sure appreciate any info you can provide on your experience with it. I'm considering the purchase of one but really don't know anything about them.

    $350 new J frame, $6 shipping

That's not too shabby. It's not a lot cheaper than Bud's but still the best price I've seen or heard of.

Has anyone tried Pachmayer Presentation grips on a J frame

The gun came to me with a set of Pacmayer Compacs installed and they fit my hand really well. To be honest, I suppose a big part of my interest in grips is perhaps wanting to buy toys without dumping a ton of money. I usually carry a gun when we go backpacking and hiking not so much for...

Has anyone tried Pachmayer Presentation grips on a J frame

Finally got my M&P340 yesterday (got it from a member and it's truely a nice, clean gun). Been looking at grips online and I really like the looks of the Pachmayer Presentation grips. The grips that came with it are fine for concealed carry. I also will be carrying it as a belt gun though when...

    J frame cylinders

Sounds like I can either swap cylinders or whole assemblies with the yoke (crane?). Might be a little easier to just swap out the whole assembly. Only other thing that bothers me is that I have a scandium frame and I worry about repeatedly removing and installing the yoke screw.

    J frame cylinder measurements

When Smith changed their J frames to the magnum frame they changed the OA length of the cylinders. Can anyone here give me the measurements for both the standard and magnum length cylinders. Or just one or the other if you don't own both. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

    J frame cylinders

Which would be a quicker swap. Just changing out the cylinder assembly (with ejectors etc) or swapping out a cylinder/crane assembly.

    J frame cylinders

I'm trying to determine if it's realistic to have a second cylinder/crane assembly cut to chamber 9mm. If it were fitted to the frame would the two assemblies be interchangable. I can have my cylinder cut but I don't want to give up the 38/357 which is my primary round. Would just like the...

    J frame cylinders

Well I hope I'm not taking this discussion beyond the scope of local knowlege but, Just how interchangable are cylinders and yokes. Are the 357 and .38 cylinders and yokes basically the same. I guess that a while back Smith changed the frames on their J's to the magnum frame (I'm just putting...

    J frame cylinders

In any event it doesn't sound like a job suited to do "in the field". Drop the new hand into a pile of forest litter and you'll never see it again.
