    JM Browning designed rifles

I believe that Col. Charles Askins wrote an article on the Winchester Model 1895 rifle which appeared in the 1973 Guns & Ammo Annual which stated that the Model 1895 action was prone to headspace issues in .30-06.

"Never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever....."

Well ... now we're going to be afflicted with "shimming a revolver is bad" in all of Firearms ForumLand for the rest of our lives by the "sky is falling" crowd who simply reads something and then regurgitates it as if they personally have vast knowledge and experience in the matter.

MAx C.U.P. pressure for 1873 springfield trapdoor 45-70

Chiming in again after12 plus years. I'm still shooting the Trapdoor I have here to a limited extent. It is liking IMR 4198 in 31 grain charge weights under 400 grain cast bullets. The load seems mild in the rifle. "Seems" is a really scientific term so work up to any load in your rifle ...

Is this H&R model as inexpensive as "decent" quality got "back when" ?

Decent is subjective, but I like ol' H&R .22 revolvers. Spent time around an H&R .22 snub when I was growing up, idly whiling away hot afternoons shooting at fuzzy weed heads from the porch of the lake cabin. Good memories of just as much fun as I've had with handguns ever since.

Would you send this gun back if you'd just received it?

That can only be described as contemptible quality. I knew there was a good reason that I shun new in favor of good ol' traditional Smith & Wessons of yore.

Model 57 nickel pinned and recessed

A Model 57 is one fine revolver and cartridge combination! I've not kept up with pricing however. Prices now days begins to sound like Monopoly money. Picked up one made in 1975 in about 2011. Wish I'd had to foresight to go the .41 Magnum route 30 years before. You don't have to tell...

Best way to care for blue finish on older revolvers

Shoot, rinse in Hoppe's No. 9, wipe with RIG, and repeat.

    Range Test: S&W 10mm vs .41 Magnum

Just ... nope. The chronograph here has always found the .41 Magnum to be a distinct level above the 10mm. The .41 Magnum is a horse! It flings heavier bullets faster. The 10mm is a very nice cartridge for an automatic, but it's overrated, both recoil and power.

    Dump the full barrel underlug.

A 4-inch Model 586 lives here, but I'd like it better if it had no underlug. Never warmed up to the L-Frames because of the underlug. They could have been a great product, but were ill thought out. L-Frames of any barrel length are less attractive and feel clumsy and L-Frames longer than...

    All S&W Mod 60 OK for +P 38 spl?

I'm willing to shoot and carry 158 grain +P in any Model 60 I might acquire without hesitation. The Model 60 is rated for .38 Special. That's all the rating I'm interested in.

Will I get kicked out for hacking this 3.5” M27?

You'd like the Magnas and T-Grip. Makes shooting the big N-Frame like drivin' a Cadillac ... well, the older big, long, and heavy Cadillacs rather than the stunted "Cadettes" they're selling now. I've got an early 50's 3 1/2-inch N-Frame .357 that's less than perfect, but sure is a dandy...

    BC gap and velocity loss??

I have a certain 158 grain .357 Magnum load using 2400 that makes a little over 1300 fps from the 6-inch Smith & Wesson Model 27 here, yet that same load barely musters 1100 fps from a 6-inch Colt Python on hand and the Python has the tighter gap. Go figure.

Will I get kicked out for hacking this 3.5” M27?

Wonder if one could scare up an N-Frame service hammer and trigger such as would be for a Model 28 from off of Ebay?

Will I get kicked out for hacking this 3.5” M27?

Not my gun so not my call. I can't stand bobbed/altered hammers which are hideously ugly and only offer illusory benefits in the mind of the owner anyway. They place single-action sears on double-action hammers for a reason. I like having choices on my double-action revolvers, single-action...

    BC gap and velocity loss??

I once cooked up a warmish 185 grain load for the .45 ACP using Unique. Clocked 950 fps from a 5-inch 1911 in chronograph tests. A test in a 5 1/2-inch Colt New Service Model 1917 revolver showed the load gen'd up 1050 fps. Did the extra half inch of barrel boost the load? Did the...

    Another New Winchester Cartridge...

Yep, .401 Winchester. Not quite to .405 WCF performance levels, either velocity or bullet weight, but then probably not quite to .405 WCF recoil levels either. It's sort of a .405 Jr. which isn't such a bad place to be.

No love out there for certain polymer pistols

A Glock 17, Smith & Wesson .40 Smith & Wesson Shield, and Kel Tec P3AT live here as studies on plastic fantastic pistolas. I loathe them all for their plastic, their ugly looks, and their sorry triggers. No more plastic pistols need apply for a roost in the safe here.
