    S&W 686 Plus Functionality

I'm actually a big fan of S&W Performance Center handguns, but I'm not sure that the current PC Shop is as good as it was even 5-10 years ago. However, for ~$150 more than a standard model the PC enhancements are probably worth the investment. Here's a quote from S&W: "Performance Center guns...

    Model Ns

Welcome back to the Forum! You have a great start to a fine collection of N-frames, but you seem to be missing the .44 Specials. Great minds think alike, as I'm also a big fan of N-frames. Although I also have other S&Ws (J-frames, K-frames, L-frames, etc.), the N-frames are definitely my...

    3" 686 CS1 2M

That's a real beauty, you did very well! All original and ANIB. Like I said above in Post #4, I'm still waiting to get my hands on a 3" CS-1. But for the time being I had to settle for a very slightly used 3" Model 686-6 Plus for substantially less money ($750 OTD). I hate those small...

    Custom 58 in 44 mag.

Very cool! Looks like a precursor to some of the later Lew Horton production runs. The thinned trigger guard may have been inspired by the 1973 Texas Ranger Model 19-3 of which I am very fond.

    MOP grips

To me, they appear to be genuine MOP and they are quite old. Even MOP tends to yellow a little, especially after 100+ years of use. As Alk8944 says, I would gently polish the medallions, and then only apply RenWax to the outer surface of the stocks. On the inner surfaces however, I would...

    3" 686 CS1 2M

I think that their asking price is in the ballpark, especially with its original box. I have my eye on one locally, but the seller is not ready to part with it yet. I'm expecting to pay $1800-$2K whenever he's ready. I believe that the price reflects its Customs Service provenance (CS-1), and...

    Finally got a nice SW M-19 2 1/2 bbl

It looks like you found a very nice nickel Model 19-3 snubby. For the longest time I was purely a blued steel revolver kind of guy, but somehow a few years ago I became attracted to some nickel models. This is a minty Model 19-4 (ca. 1978) that I found at a local gun store. It's a P&R...

Do alphanumeric serial numbers ever have four zeros?

I believe I'm seeing a trend in snw19_357's niche style of collecting!

    ID this J frame

Just for comparison, here's my 642-2 (2009) with the IL. I picked up this slightly used one years ago for $250, and it's been one of my pocket carry EDCs. The finish is peeling in a couple of spots, but it's only cosmetic and no big deal.

    Quality Control

It's one reason that so many folks are buying the new Colt snake guns instead of S&W revolvers! Very poor machining and QC!

What was your first Smith and Wesson??

When I got out of college and had my first real job, I looked for a "Dirty Harry" Model 29. Unfortunately, they were as scarce as hen's teeth in 1977-78, so instead I purchased a brand spankin' new blued 4" Model 57 (with the mahogany presentation case). It turned out to be an excellent choice...

    Lacquer Stock Refinishing

You did a nice job of recreating the factory finish. Just curious, did you use 0000 steel wool between coats? Personally, I'm not a big fan of the lacquer finish so whenever I have to refinish revolver stocks I usually apply multiple coats of Formby's Low Gloss Tung Oil Finish since I prefer a...

Has my 14-3 been modified to take .357?

Welcome to the Forum, and my condolences on the passing of your Grandpa. However, he did leave you an interesting Model 14-3 revolver and it should be a fun shooter. I would have to vote with the majority, and whether or not it was modified to shoot .357 Magnum rounds, I would stick with .38...

    My new 19-3 From 1970

Very nice! Looks like the predecessor to my Texas Ranger Commemorative Model 19-3, from 1973. Probably one of my favorite S&W revolvers...beautifully made and the features and the fit and finish are outstanding. Mine is a shooter, not a collector's item. Enjoy!

Nickel 25 with Culina Black and White Ebony’s

Those stocks are outstanding! I've never seen ebony like that! And of course, they have the usual Culina quality work.

    M&P9 Shield Plus add-on

Safety was purchased from [email protected]. I found his product referenced on YouTube. Small business, but the safety is very well made and easy to use. ~$70, and I installed it myself.

    Very, Very frustrated

Welcome to the Forum! The SCSW 5th Ed. is an excellent source of information, but unfortunately it is not a perfect reference book and is continually being updated by the authors. Some of its information must be supplied by Forum members (i.e. serial numbers of their firearms). In the case of...

    Traditional knives…

Although I have a few vintage folding pocket knives, I thought that I would share this Colonial that was my grandfather's pocket/fishing knife. The celluloid scales had shrunk and were falling off, so I removed, cleaned, and re-installed them. I have heard some horror stories about celluloid...

Lack of interest in 40 SW yet 10MM is getting popular??

I have plenty of revolvers and pistols in assorted calibers, but a couple of years ago I decided on getting a S&W M&P 10mm 2.0 (4.6" bbl). I wanted a high capacity pistol with more rounds than a .45 ACP and more punch than a 9mm. I also wanted to be able to mount a weapon light and RDO. I...

Early Model 57 with rare Vinyl Covered Presentation Case

Beautiful Model 57, and an unusual case. I've never seen one with the "vinyl" covering, although the cardboard cut-outs and satin material are pretty standard for these early .41 Magnum cases. I thought that the early Model 57 cases (mid-1960s) were standard mahogany wood cases (like most...
