How Europe's oldest language ended up on US trees

Basque??? BBC article here. The US' Basque immigrants turned to sheepherding in order to survive. Today, their legacy can be found in unique wooden tree carvings they left throughout the American West.

    Something oddly jarring tonight

That's what it hit here on June 28, 2021 when we had the heat dome. The folks in AZ and NM can laugh, but that's plenty extreme enough for me!

You have to be a certain age

I remember some article or tv segment years ago about the Topo Gigio team. It took several people and a special set to make it work. Apparently sometimes they didn't get along well and nearly broke into fisticuffs on occasion.

    Banned Firearm

Well, you're not suffering if that's your only Sig :) Our (Canada) armed forces finally replaced their WWII-vintage BHPs with.... the Sig 320! Can't find it now but there was an article not long ago of them acknowledging reported AD issues with the 320 but as I recall they dismissed it as "a...

Fun day at the range yesterday

My neighbour up the street and I have begun nominally going to the range every couple of weeks. Pistol range was empty (as usual) when we got there in the morning but after a while a couple of other guys arrived. My buddy brought his 686 and Model 10; I had my Model 14, 625 (.45 AR), GP100 and...

    Something oddly jarring tonight

My gf does the same, despite having the abovementioned mod-cons (except A/C). Sits on her patio and takes pics of the hummingbirds or the sunsets. There was a recent thread on "the simple things in life". This is one of them.

    Keg of old powder

Well, all that tells us is that it is REALLY old.

There is something faint in pencil on the RH side of the label by "TYPE". ....?

I immediately recognized this as I took this pic on Jan.31 and posted it in Random Object Photos the same day with the comment, "I'm not sure I want to know what's behind that door." It's an office down the hall from the physio I was going to. Stuff sure gets around :) @MetalMan: So YOU know...

    Something oddly jarring tonight

My cat does the same, but his hearing and eyesight are (seemingly) so acute that when he leaps up on the couch and stares intently out the window it's probably because a molecule moved unexpectedly down by the well house. (Or it could be a bear sniffing along the fence line 70 yards away.) As...

Warning! Gas stoves are hazardous to your health

This is already happening in Bellingham WA. I believe you cannot install gas-burning appliances or furnaces/boilers in a new house. (Not sure about replacing existing.) I believe it is being challenged in court but not sure where that stands.

Warning! Gas stoves are hazardous to your health

Most of us "of a certain age" (unspecified!) probably grew up in "unhealthy" environments but our houses were not as well sealed or insulated as they are now, so we had a degree of "ventilation" to reduce the exposure. Adding a label should be no big deal. But isn't that information in the...
