    .357 Magnum REG 657 Update

I think the comparison leads me to believe “F L’s” signature is on the letter. “FL” seems to have his signatures character above his name. “AD” seems to have his below.

    .357 Magnum REG 657 Update

Just a thought ! What do you think about the issue of the revolvers timing being out of sorts that was something Toepperwein discovered rather than agent White. 5. Letter from Potchernick's dated Dec 11, 1936. States gun is the property of Jomer C White, c/o the Federal Bureau of...

    .357 Magnum REG 657 Update

Just as an FYI the Bureau of Investigation was formed in 1908 and J. Edgar Hoover became its Director in 1924 and it’s “Agents” did not have authority to make arrests or carry weapons. In 1934 Congress enacted the Bank Robbery Act and other crime bills giving the FBI powers of arrest and the...

    S&W letter

It’s interesting the attention my RM is receiving. The letter from Don Mundell indicated a nickel finish on the pistols shipping records. The email I got from Bill Cross stated the Asst. Chief inquired in a 1945 letter to S&W about getting this gun re-nickeled! I have been doing some...

    S&W letter

Yesterday was a hot day in Florida made better by on and off rain. I was in my workshop taking a Champions Choice barrel weight off a model 52. Hours went by as the last guy who owned it filed the heads off the set screws and silver soldered it on. I’m saying it was too hot to continue and the...

Not sure it ever went very far from Lakeland. The person who sold it lives in the next town over.

    S&W letter

Things got even better! Got an email from Bill Cross telling me the RM was the subject of a letter dated October 29, 1945 from Leo H. Brooker, Assistant Chief of Police, Lakeland Police Department, to Smith & Wesson requesting information on having his .357 Magnum, REG. #3235 re-nickeled and...

    S&W letter

Well the wait is over with a letter authored by Don Mundell stating my registered magnum was shipped on Dec 10,1937 to the City of Lakeland Florida. It was in a shipment of eight. States it was shipped with a Nickel finish and walnut stocks and is identical to five others in the shipment. Mine...

This is my first letter for a S&W too. Thanks! Wish I had a clue on the backlog.

    S&W letter

I posted this some months ago and can add that I still haven’t heard a thing. Truthfully, with life getting back to normal in Florida, I sort of forgot about the letter. I am really anxious to find out about it and the wait to learn of it’s mystery/history makes it cooler. My check was...

The rarest Model 1911 pistols ever made...

Kevin, I have a question! As I replied to the OP In examining my buddy’s. NAA, and then another I detected a copper undertone to the blued finish. Now this is unlike the natural “browning” of the finish you come to expect on old pistols. Curious as to your opinion.

The rarest Model 1911 pistols ever made...

Understand we are talking Unicorns here. Having been in discussions with a buddy who owns one not far from what I thought you were displaying “84” there was discussion by him that he had seen pistols numbering in the 200 & 300 range. Incidentally, I passed on the NAA he owns because so little...

The rarest Model 1911 pistols ever made...

Interesting pistol and I have one question! In looking closely at its finish does yours have the appearance of being “copper clad” at some point prior to its being blued? On the two I’ve examined they seem to give off that appearance. My buddy has a numbered pistol really close to yours...

    S&W letter

About a month ago I filled out a sheet of information I down loaded from this forum and mailed it off to Roy Jinks. I was lucky to find a registered magnum and would like to know its shipping history. This is my first try at a Smith letter. I’m a Colt collector and use to a slow turn around...

Colt 1911 NM .38 Special mid range.

Joining in to wish the OP well on his acquisition. Giles and Clark guns in .38WC are interesting and the earliest seem to be around 1959. Giles can be recognized by his stippling and “wagon wheel” sights. He applied no other markings as to his work. Clark had the very sharp “tiger tooth”...

    Post your modified 1917s!

Normally a lurker but I find this thread interesting. Here’s a 1917 Colt. Not a “Fitz” but one done nicely by someone who knew what they were doing. The DA trigger is like butter.
