S&W .32 CF SA Factory Case

I think they are made from quarter sawn walnut. Cutting walnut quarter sawn will give the strait grain that the Smith & Wesson case has. Here are some pictures of an old walnut cabinet that is plain sliced next to a Smith and Wesson Case, which is quarter sawn. Plain slice wood gives the...

    Smith & Wesson .32 Double Action 4th Model - 2" - S & W

FS1ST - Have you removed the grips to see if there are any numbers on the sides of the frame? The numbers on the barrel look like they end in 78 when you zoom in

    Factory Engraved?

I agree with mrcvs, looks factory to me. The standard catalog of smith and wesson has an engraving section. It shows the different levels of engraving that could be factory ordered.

Show us Your Short Barreled Batt 44 Mr Shorty Carried

Was listening to Marty Robins song today called Mr, Shorty. He sings about a Short Barreled Batt 44. I think I found it, or could have been it. Mine is a 4.25" barreled 2nd model American. The chamber has been reamed to accept a short 44-40. The action works, if you cock it slowly so the...

    1st. Model DA grips

There are 2 different pin locations for these grips/guns. I have not figured out which one came first. The pin location may follow a basic set of rules, but knowing that Smith and Wesson never threw anything away, anything goes when they decided to use up the old parts. I replaced the...

My "new" New Departure 2nd Model 1.5"

Odds are low for your gun to be factory. All factory 1 1/2" guns I have seen have don't have any patents on the top of the barrel, have the cut back top rib with the radius inside and out like a regular barrel length gun, and have a pinned front sight. I know Smith and Wesson made a small...

    Top break information.

Great gun with an uncommon barrel length. Only about 8.5% of the surviving 38 SA 2nd models wear 5" barrels.

    What Would You Do?

Webb, What does the top of the barrel look like? How far from the patents is the front sight? I would crown it and make the end of the barrel engraving look like it was not cut off too. It would look better if it looked like it was professionally cut of, in my opinion. Beautiful engraving!

    Hinged box end label over-stamp?

I would agree with Webb. They look like a distributor inventory number. Catalog no. 124. : Sears, Roebuck and Company : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

Antique Smith & Wesson picture box

Love the old ammo boxes. I purchase them to display with my revolvers. Try to get the ones with pictures that match the gun. Has anyone seen a box of old 22 ammo with a picture of the the first, second, or third single shot?

    S&w for review

Even though 6500 were made in blue, not many survived compared to the nickel guns. I track the features of the baby russians to learn more about them. Right now I have info on 290 surviving guns. Of these only 27 are blue, or 9.3%. Nickel are 89% and a combo of nickel, gold, and silver are...

Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless Fifth Model "Bicycle" Revolver

Here is the 2 1/2" Safety Hammerless in 38 that is factory original. It has the roll stamp on the top rib that is incomplete as described in my previous post. It shipped to an individual in May of 1908. The special order guns don't seem to follow any rules.

Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless Fifth Model "Bicycle" Revolver

In my opinion the only way to tell if a 38 Safety Hammerless with a 2" barrel is by a letter of authenticity. There are no clear ways the factory marked these guns. It is very rare that you find one with the patent roll marks on it. I have a 2 short barrels (less than 3 1/4") that have...

    38 Double Action Police Guns

Neat guns guys, thanks for sharing. Reading about the fallen officers in the link SGT ROCK 11B posted makes me remember and appreciate the sacrifices the first responders make every day. They gave all to protect the law abiding. A big thanks to the men and women of the military too, who also...

    38 Double Action Police Guns

The serial number for the CPD police gun in the original post is 345,041. The one not marked as a police gun with the Model of 91 barrel is serial number 345,072 and it shipped to E. K. Tryon Co in Philadelphia, PA in July of 1897.

    38 Double Action Police Guns

Does anyone have a 38 double action police gun they want to share? Here is one marked for the Cleveland Police Department. What is interesting is that it has a Model of 91 barrel. I'm sure the barrel is original to the gun because I have one about 30 serial numbers away from this one with a...
