Best 38 Special Ammo for Snubbies:

If I get down to depending on a .38 (which I do like!) it will be because I either ran out of ammo or lost my .45! But almost invarably it will have Buffalo Bore Ourdoorsman - a 158 at ~1000 fps from my 1 7/8" 36 - I am currently rethinking my carry load-out - perhaps one "expander" and the...

.38 Special LSWCHP +P FBI load

I don't, but perhaps I'm nit picking. We had a chronograph availble to our little group in the mid 1970s - Winchester FBI load got over 900 fps from a 4" S&W M-10 heavy barrel - fast forward to today, ant it gets 804 fps - but I should point out that is a different chrono and a different gun...

    .22 Rimfire Revolver Musings

I have a 4" M-18 that is a 4 Screw, it is NIB so I don't shoot it but I sure do my other S&W - here is a K-22 minted in the same year I was born, 1951 and I also have a Bekhart Spl. made in 1927 that shoots even better - the targets are shot at 7, 15, 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards DA when that...

    Model 27 .357

I am not sure just when Jelly Bryce switched over from the .44 Spl. but the gun in the picture sure does look like a Registered (or non-registered) Magnum. I suspect it was around the time the FBI "drafted" him. There is a bio, I think it might have been authored by Ron Owens? I've read it...

    Mt Gun vs Model 18

Might be just me, but I would not trade any old S&W, in decent shape, for any new S&W! I might someday consider buying a new S&W but only because money seems worth less today than it used to be. Still, to each their own! Riposte

    Possible Unicorn model 14-3 357 1972

Isn't that going to make the ejector rod a bit too long for the forward locking bolt? Of course one could shortent the ejector rod and the center pin. Riposte

    Possible Unicorn model 14-3 357 1972

I'm sort of confused (not a new thing for me  ) but a Model 19 barrel has a shorter extension than a Model 14 barrel because the cylinder on the 19 is longer - so if the shrouded barrel doesn't create about a 1/4" flash gap it is indeed a special barrel. Riposte

Has my 14-3 been modified to take .357?

I have one of his "Smolt" revolvers - a Colt Python barrel on a S&W M-19 - Bill for sure knew what he was doing. Riposte

.38 Special or .357 for EDC

I typically carry the BB Outdoorsman load (+P 158 LSWCHP) when I carry a .357 gun - I don't mind the various .357 "medium" loads but I don't like 125 gr. expanding bullets for fear of them not going deep enough, I do think the XTP isn't bad but I'd rather have more weght. In my airweight guns...

    2" vs 3" .38/.357 revolvers

I like my 2" (approximate) guns fine, and I can shoot them well, but I admit, I like a 3" gun even better. I seldom carry a gun in a pocket, and on the belt I never notice the difference between 2 and 3 inch. Riposte

    Triple lock opinion

Back when I bought my triple lock Sherer was listing them for $4500, I'm sure they are more now. I keep watching them on auctions - used, no box can run close to that on the high end but I've seen a few, in fairly rough shape go for $1500. Riposte

.38 Special or .357 for EDC

My friend Chuck Haggard says "A .357 is just a .38 spl with a flash-bang attached" - I can't improve on that :) Although, I don't much by into the theory that you can even establish a useable methodology for keeps records of "street results" I have floated the idea that the muzzle blast of a...

    Triple lock opinion

I have a 1012 Triple lock, it was likely a standard model but profesionally modified by Kings or Micro (not sure when) - I paid $400 for it perhaps 12 years ago. I paid $500 for the 1950 target with it 20 years ago - both in .44 spl. BTW, Bryan Pearce has a nice vidoe on YouTube on why you...

.38 Special or .357 for EDC

Each person has to find his own answer. And it would seem like just guessing at it would not lead to the best outcomes. for many decades I do what I call a "Controllabilibty test" - I shoot a number of rounds, typically 5, as fast as I can keep hits withing a 4X6 Index card at 5 yards. (lately...

    Aluminum Frame / Steel Slide

I recall that. IIRC the Comander fired 16000 rounds, very few, if any, stoppages. Riposte

Consorting with the enemy (hey, its better than no consorting at all!) S&W herecy!

I gave the son a "Smolt" by Bill Davis of CA one year for Christmas - it is a nickel S&W Model 19 with a 6" Python barrel (that was the Davis term but he might have had others). I've hear of the same thing done to Ruger Security Six's and called a "Couger". Neat guns but we will never fire a...

    2" vs 3" .38/.357 revolvers

While I don't necesarrily feel the cons of a snubby outweigh the pros of the 4", I agree with your general statement. I don't want to come off as the expert here, but I do beleive what I've been taught - accuracy comes in different categories - Practical and Mechanical. Some of the above posts...

.380 ACP: Flat-Point FMJ vs JHP

Correct! It actually may not even be science - or at least as much science as implied - I have no critizism of what folks do it, heck I've shot about everything from water, to water soaked newsprint (there is actually an IWBA protocol for newsprint and a calibration scale), to wax, to duxseal...

    Black-Tie Guns

About the only time I wear a tie these days is to a funeral, and even then I'm just about as likely to dress casual unless I'm a pall bearer (which seems to happen more frequently these days :( ) When it is an event to honor a friend that shoots I will carry a nice 1911 with ivory, bone or...
