An interesting meeting with the animals

Animal mounts are not a "once and done". They require careful, sometimes expert, maintenance to stay looking crisp. Additionally mounts are subject to infestation by peculiar insects, with efforts that must be made to keep them away.

Which 66 (No Dash) is the better gun?

Sideplate screws have been touched up on both. If properly fitting screw drivers are used they won't get to needing that. Alternatively the old screws can be replaced with crisp, pristine new ones at modest cost. A tad of minor fitting may be required for the one that secures the cylinder...

    Mt Gun vs Model 18

If your older M18 is a good one, and it probably is, you do not want to send it down the road. Too hard to find another good one.

    Keg of old powder

I would not give up on it just yet. The metal can is in great condition. The powder sample on top in the scale pan looks OK. The issue is identifying exactly WHICH powder it is. Keep searching on the can. If you can identify it, it may take looking through older reloading manuals to find...

Lack of interest in 40 SW yet 10MM is getting popular??

The 10mm higher capacity semi auto has come on strong the last 2-3 years. It is now recognized as a good back up round when thinning the wild pig horde. Pigs have tough skin over their vitals, making the 10mm a great choice for expected or chance encounters with them.

5 Screw Highway Patrolman, hope I did alright on the deal.

Great price for what appears to be a nice condition Mod 28. Drilled hole in the grips doesn't happen to line up for access to the strain screw does it? From the pic, it appears a bit high for that. Regardless, I would not sweat the grips.

    saw a 27-2 5in

Looks like a lengthy soak in Kroil for the cylinder is in order. Afterwards, take a fired brass cartridge case and gently scrape at the rust with the case mouth. Is the photographed ugly spot the only one on the cylinder?

    saw a 27-2 5in

I got hold of a blued N frame a while back that had minor finish issues. Even though it had an old factory re-blue, it had the beginings of micro blue specs here and there. Cleaned up nicely. It required a Powers oversize hand to be fit for it to run right. If you are looking for a good...

    Powder Valley Destroyed

From another source, it appears that serveral computer servers were snatched out of the office before the fire got to them. It will take a major effort to rebuild and restock. Let's wish them the best fortune in that effort.

38 special brass- what brand do you like by best? Any to avoid?

There is a reason why AMERC marked brass has problems. The company making that loaded ammo kinda made up their spec's as they went. The company has been defunct for several years now. I have a simple rule for ANY brass I find with the AMERC headstamp; it goes directly into the recycle box...

    Aimpoints or Red Dots

Red dots do require that the shooter know the vertical mechanical offset for various distances, due to bullet drop, as does use of irons or scopes. Typically distance accuracy by many red dot users does markedly improve over irons. Dots aren't magic; time and effort is required to learn to...

    Aimpoints or Red Dots

Those that use red dot pistol scopes professionally (LE) most commonly run one of the newer cube type, such as an Aimpoint ACCRO P-2. For the average user, something along the line of the Holosun 407 Shake Awake 3 MOA red dot will do fine. This particular one is a Palmetto State Armory...

Question - chamfering cylinder charge holes

Too often, users fail to remove the star before begining work. It only takes a LITTLE bevel to get the job done. A ball end mill, on a hand tool will accomplish whats needed. Like over beveling the forcing cone as well as removing more metal than necessary when squaring the cone, please STOP...

The most rusted stainless steel gun I have ever seen in person - a PSA!

I haven't had rust under the grips on wood, plastic, micarta, or G10 grips. Still, every so often, the frame under them gets a light coat of low evaporating gun oil. Light coat please. I don't trust frames, even SS, under rubber grips not to rust, regardless of the oil.

No trigger over travel on my model 57.

N frame Smiths have never had the small triangular piece; it is typically in K frames, of the 50's to 70's era. By the early to mid-70's, it was deleted in LE service K's. In general, that would be 2 1/2" and 4" revolvers. The small screw that holds that stop in place could become loose...

    S&W 4" blue 15-4 Price

Price would depend on if it is a TT, TH, and TS version. Still finding a bone basic NIB 15-3 is uncommon these days. Let the bargaining begin, but don't haggle too long if you want it.

    S&W 649, price

Don't think about it long, as it will be gone. Earlier 649's are uncommon. Depending on the service it saw, the SA feature may have been deleted from the hammer; check that as you are buying. As-new old stock 649 hammers are scarce and pricey. You might be OK with an older gen 640, but not...

Were you law enforcement in the 70’s-80’s? What did you carry?

The shop that produced the Metaloy finish handguns had its start in oil field equipment. Hard chrome was the game. It was perfect for the pistons on the big "earthquake" similating trucks used in oil field logging. Pistons had to be a perfect tight fit and had to hold up to extreme abuse...
