    J Frame Grips

The most effective grips I've found for shooting comfort with a J frame is the now-discontinued Uncle Mikes rubber licensed version of the original Ahrends wood Boot Grip. The S&W factory once offered a very near copy, in rubber, of the Ahrends; alas they have dried up. All the other J frame...

    removal of broken extractor rod

A while back I had an extractor rod snap off at the threads, leaving nothing to grab hold of to remove the threaded portion of the rod remaining in the cylinder. After soaking the entire cylinder in Kroil for over a week, I came upon a potential fix. Placing a Torx tip tool inside the stub...

Ammo: What does the 15-22 like?

Kp321 has some good points. The 15-22 is highly dependent on its magazine and how it is loaded. Once I went to the McFadden Machine loading tool the "how it was loaded" problem went away. The factory mags do not have the life one might expect, even with regular tear-down cleaning. All the...

Went to the range. Got shot at!

Safe range use and management is a thing. The adult should not have been expecting to shoot while supervising youth. Three competent youth shooters would be my personal max. The youth should have been limited to single shot .22 rifles, fired from a bench rest. The adult in this case going...

    model 66-1

If S&W does not have the necessary parts on hand to replace any worn/damaged ones on a pistol out of warranty that they are requested to repair, they will decline working on it. It's a business decision on their part and should not be considered as a failure on their side.

Would You Tell Someone If You Noticed Them Printing.

I made a major exception the other day to my "see something, don't say something" personal rule regarding this. An individual inside a Walmart had holster protruding about an inch below his untucked T-shirt. There was a bulge on his opposite side that was about the size and shape of a badge...

    Cataract Surgery Question

I did the advanced (and more expensive) multi-distance focus length implants. Both surgeries were uneventful, as was the recovery. Surgeon warned me that, due to my astigmatism, I had about an 8% chance of issues. Several months pass, with vision getting better noticably for the first few...

    SIG P320 Discharges?

My state's highway patrol pulled all the issued P320's in service in past months.

    S&W Product “Improvements” in 1990s

For a while, I was involved in the manufacture of ECM pistol barrels. Done properly, with attention paid to tight specs and careful quality control, a superior barrel can be produced. Under .00002" variation per inch of barrel is possible. Extreme barrel interior smoothness is possible...

What is the best way to make Model 66 no dash stainless sights easier to see?

As others have mentioned, colored finger nail polish or model paint for the front and a black Sharpie for the rear. Works fine even today. Back in the day, we used the same methods. The length of time the Sharpie stays put partly depends on your holster design. No problem to touch up or...

    FOUND Need a holster for 4” N

A couple come to mind to tote a 4" N OWB somewhat discretely. A Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake looks bulky (it's not), however when worn with a pistol it "simply" works. Belt slots are cut to balance gun weight well, and pull gun butt nicely into the body. Top of the holster leather protects...

    18-3 & Hogue grips

If the Hogue wood grips fit your hand well, then why not. Since recoil is near a non-issue, if they feel good when you first pick up your 18, with these installed, you are ready to try live fire.

Bond Arms 9mm to 38 Super

You will want to check case and casehead spec's of 9mm and 38 Super before you proceed. I would not suggest doing it.

Model 63/ Model 18 the same?

A 63 is a SS J frame and the 18 is a blued K. I've owned both and prefer the 18. Depending on your purpose, you may make a different choice.

    Holster Maintenance

A light coat on the exterior of Fiebing's 4 Way should do. Do NOT use saddlesoap.

    629 Classic - defects

That's a really poor job of electro etching. I've done it on 100's of barrels and guns. If it were mine, it would be going back. The recoil shield burr, if that were the only issue, I would carefully fix it myself. Look the whole gun over very closely; where there are 2 deficiencies there...

    Screw Removal Problem

By any chance, do the screw ends run through the slide, perhaps into the firing pin channel? If so, some Kroil applied there may aid in the removal process.

    Tulsa Show Finds

Black insert on a nickel gun makes sense to someone who is actually going to shoot it primarily daytime hours. Red inserts shine well only at dawn and dusk. Yellow inserts have their place too.

Concealed Carry, 4 inch. K Frame?

I have an older Lobo Leather ISP with rear sight "ears" that will make a adj. sighted K flat disappear with wearer comfort. For times when "disappeared" can be replaced with "mostly hid", I have a thumbbreak DeSantis OWB. Both are comfortable strongside rigs that I carry at about 4 o'clock.
