Well, I finally got a gun from my agency

I'll 2nd the grey scotch bright pad. If you have a SS S&W K that's in newer condition you can study the direction of travel used on various spots of the revolver. You may need to experiment with how much pressure put on the pad to get the look to match S&W Factory. Hint: start with light pad...

Model 19-10 Ejector Rod Removal Help

I've found it not worth the effort to try to straighten one of these. Hopefully the inner rod is not likewise bent.Buy a new factory rod for this particular model. See the Kuhnhausen book for "how to" and recommended tools.

    Hi Power

I had a late 1960's BHP whose stock barrel shot well with 125 gr hard lead H&G #7 cone nose bullets, sized .358. I think that the "hard lead" and the "sized to .001 over bore was what made things work. The cone nose fed perfectly 100% to boot. Slug your bore is a fine suggestion if you plan...

1911 Full Length Guide Rod *** ADDED 2ND QUESTION )***

The FLGR doesn't completely stop the "shove the slide end against something solid" method of 1911 clearing, but it certainly seriously limits. Would not want to be using this precise method in emergency circumstances.

    Hi Power

If your BHP has the stock barrel, with the skinny rifling, it may well prefer 115 FMJ's. Likely won't shoot well with 147's or even 135's. Also likely it won't like lead/plastic coated lead bullets. Still, every gun will have it's own preferences.

    Tool Kit - Recommendations

With today's carry optic guns, toting a torque screw driver has become common for me. Not so much for me, but for other competitors who didn't use one for their original dot mount. A spare dot battery for each type you run is a good addition. As already mentioned, you'll need to specialize...

1911 Full Length Guide Rod *** ADDED 2ND QUESTION )***

The SS two-piece will stay intact, most of the time, when vigorously tightened. The carbon steel will unscrew itself quickly. Not my preferred choice on a competitive gun. I value the one piece more for a little moreforward weight on a competitive action sports gun. Some 1911 accessories...

1911 Full Length Guide Rod *** ADDED 2ND QUESTION )***

On a 1911, a full length guide rod is not an essential part. It does take the snakey kink travel out of the recoil spring, producing what some feel is a smoother action. The full length guide rod made from steel, either carbon or more often SS, does put a bit more weight forward, which is a...

    IDPA Revolver Recommedations

Rules for revolver in IDPA, ICORE, and USPSA have changed over time. IDPA has remained true to "load only 6 rounds, regardless of cylinder capacity." USPSA has changed. When IDPA started, the winning setup was a 5" S&W 625. A couple years later, the rule was changed to limit to 4.25"; fair...

    Nice .38 640 for $450?

Good price. Unless the revolver has been "fluffed and buffed" to look new (you can spot that), you have a winner. Earlier 640's in .38 Spl are the best IMO.

Local store has a 66-1 for $700... should I jump on it?

IMO a 66 is a "carry much and shoot not so much" if we're speaking of .357 magnums. Now .38 Spl, it is a shoot plenty of those. If you wish to shoot lots of the pricey .357 magnums, get an L or and N frame. Around these parts, your dealer's asking price is pretty good; bet he'll negotiate...

    66-1 commemoratives

Most S&W revolvers that are somewhat factory defective can be addressed in the field to work 100%. I would agree that should not happen, but factories are not perfect, because humans work there. I've only gotten hold of ONE S&W L frame that could not be fixed due to poor frame machine work...

Why are N-frame .357 cylinders short?

Could be the factory was trying to keep the cylinder weight down, so the action would work lighter.

    27-2 good price

One has to WANT the 8 3/8" barrel for it to be attractive. If it was a 3 1/2 to 6 1/2" it would already be gone.

    66-1 commemoratives

S&W was putting lots of commemorative pistols out the door about that time. From the appearances of the images, looks like this one might have been carried some. Not so sure that S&W necessarily expected this, as in some cases the guns were put together on frames that should not have passed...

    S&W 15-3

When LE agencies buy firearms, they do so in batches. Typically they buy more than they need, in a bare bones sense. The extra are for loaners during repair, for new hires, etc. The ones that remain in the armory unissued can come up as surplus as the agency changes to a newer era of...

    1911 OWB

DeSantis Avenger rides higher than some and is straight up draw. Quality cowhide with a tension device. Midway has these in stock at a good price. The Avenger pattern is an old classic that is still relevant today. Good for everyday carry, with easy concealment. Works as a range/base...

What to expect when I send my revolver for repair?

Been a while since I needed to send a S&W revolver back, but the following still apply. This is for any firearm, to any maker BTW. Remove anything non-factory. Would include action parts, special springs, optics, etc. I would not send the revolver in with the grips on, if the factory grips...

    686 SSR Odd Finding

The stainless steel used in firearms is typically some 400's series variant. It WILL rust, if given sufficient neglect. Usually takes a while for the onset and can generally be avoided by regular firearm maintenance and a little quality oil on all surfaces, including under the grips.

    9 Luger vs 9 IMI

Unless a 9x19 barrel is "punched out" with a longer chamber, a 9x21 round should not fit to fire. The 9x21 has had only limited acceptance in the US. As mentioned, its best use is perhaps in the many countries around the world that prohibit civilians owning firearms chambered in military...
