    Choosing Your Handguns in War

I get what you are saying. Perhaps it is the brush blued finish as you call it. I do not have the gun with me. I'm at our retirement home and the gun is still at the old place. I will look next time I go back. I have been wrong before. Just ask my wife! ha ha

    Choosing Your Handguns in War

My father in law carried a colt 1917 DA 45 in WWII. That DA45 was issued to his uncle in WWI. I now have that 45 and shoot it once in a while. It is very tight and in very good condition.

The death of the steam engine was when the coal miners union president was paid by General Electric to start a coal strike that happened in 1948 and that put the screws to the railroads. That is when GE pushed the diesels on the railroads. They were underpowered and they needed as many as 10...

The big boys can pull any train they can hook onto it. There was a standard order that two big boys could NOT be double headed because they would pull a train apart. Double heading did happen for transfer of power only. Actually the big boys could provide electrical power for any passenger...

It would take about a mile to stop that engine with a train. And probably more like 50,000 tons of freight. A big boy did stall out going up a steep grade with a train load of boxite ore. It made headlines.

The "Big Boys" came out during the war. My father in law bought a 1944 locomotive cylopedia that has the specs and info of the new locomotive. They were guaranteed to pull 5 miles of box cars 60 mph. The 4000 left Omaha with 5 miles of loaded boxcars headed west. They put her through all the...

    Brake Check - would you?

What I have found recently is there are people you come up going 55 on a 70 mph road. When opportunity arises you start to pass and then they decide not to let you pass so they speed up and keep you from passing or you just have to step on the gas more to finally get pass them. What is with that...

    Anyone else use a bedroll?

My parents bought me a bad with the extra material to make a little tent over your head. I still have that bag and use it. It is heavy duty and I have slept in -20 weather in it. I did get cold though. I never used it with the sticks for a tent cover. I too have a winter bag from WWII that my...

What is the best gun for Bear Defense?

Yes that was me with the trashed garage doors. This same son was charged by a griz behind our chicken coop and put two 20 ga. slugs into it. Killing it. That was in 2002. Both sons have had several grizzly encounters while bow hunting elk here in MT.

    Brake Check - would you?

At first I thought this was a made up story-you stated that you had I-25 to your self in CO. I haven't seen that since the 80's! ha ha But then I realized you were telling the truth when you say the car behind you was a State Patrol. I have seen a a definite decrease in the courtesy and...

What is the best gun for Bear Defense?

The load my son used is a 225 gr. hollow point. Not a good load for bear, BUT the bullet went clean through the skull and exited out the throat. At 8 ft. The bullet did go all the way through the skull. But the bears head had to be close perpendicular to have that happen. I think the thing to...

    Brake Check - would you?

I understand your position. I agree with it except that when I move up on a car to pass it I am spending less time in the other lane and I get around and back into my lane faster. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't like to be in an on coming lane of traffic, even though it is safe to pass.

What is the best gun for Bear Defense?

We discussed the fact the bears head was down when he made the shot. A perpendicular shot to the head. It was very fortunate it all turned out well for my son. I carry a 629 and bought both my sons a 629 to carry while bow hunting and in the back country. But the 629 is a bit more cumbersome...

What is the best gun for Bear Defense?

I have read and been part of several discussions about what is the best gun for self defense against a bear. This is what happened to my son on Thursday. He hunts for a living for a hunting magazine. He was hunting a black bear with his bow. He stalked to within 15 yards of a bear. Shot it. The...

That is what I do when someone comes up on me. I make it easy for them to pass me.

    Brake Check - would you?

Brake checking or tapping is a sign of road rage. Meaning "I am going to make you back off". Tailgating is also a sign of road rage saying "get going jerk" I do tail gate WHEN I get ready to pass. When I see an opening I move right up and when the opportunity is there I get around the person...
