Found this yesterday at Cabelas. SN V1808XX, 4" barrel, black finish and marked "U S Navy". Overall excellent condition to my eyes. I think it dates to the early '40's and would have been carried by a Navy guy during WWII.
I'm pretty excited but have to wait a bit to get it as I bought it in...

Thanks everyone - that really helps. One of these days I'll go back to that store, probably next week, but doubt that we'll be able to make a deal.
Thanks anyway.

Today in a pawn shop I found this gun. Dealer called it a model 18-3 (.22 rimfire) SN 5K591XX, priced at $599. I looked at it carefully and although I'm a novice I think it is mechanically good, tight, bore good etc. Grips OK and blue finish maybe 80% or so. So I'm guessing overall condition...

New to me at least - Mod 29-3, blue, 6" barrel, .44 Mag, SN AUD48XX. A Thing of beauty.
Can anyone tell me the date of manufacture??
Also I keep hearing about "Smith and Wesson Letters". I'm a newbie here - what does that mean? Will Smith send me a letter telling me info about my gun(s)...

Now that I have this oldie I think I've caught the bug - others may be in my future!!

Hi Everyone
Just got this "new" old S&W. It came from a local dealer and was advertised as "WW II Army Issue". Maybe. What I think I know though is that it is an M&P 4th change, SN 9246XX, which according to my S&W catalog makes it maybe late '30s to '42. This SN appears on the but, the...

The same dealer has a M&P US Army issue revolver, vintage WWII. If I buy the revolver I'll buy some of his ammo. Is the ammo collectible or just the boxes? I ask because I could shoot the ammo and save the boxes???

In another thread I started a few days ago, you guys helped me by clarifying that .38 Special and .38 S&W are not the same. Thanks!
Since then I have found that Midway sells dies and brass for .38 S&W but none of my reloading manuals has data for this cartridge.
Anybody have recipes - just for...

I should know this but don't. Are .38 S&W and .38 Special actually the same cartridge? If I were to get an older S&W revolver chambered for .38 S&W, could I fire standard velocity .38 Special through it?
Thanks
