HomeSmith Custom Shop: The Faux Pinto Thread

Sellers are really proud of donor frames right now….I’ve found it to be better overall to buy complete guns.

HomeSmith Custom Shop: The Faux Pinto Thread

After the pin was out, the MGW barrel taker offer was attached and the barrel magically fell off. With the barrel off, the next step was to figure out what stainless barrel should be used. I can (and have) fit barrels to frames but it’s sooooo much easier and faster to just walk over to...

HomeSmith Custom Shop: The Faux Pinto Thread

Today I'm rust bluing a 10-8 that is getting converted from a 4" .38 to a 3" .357 and had some time to work on the 19-3. I started by stripping it down and using my new barrel pin punches from @-BTM- Custom Punch Works to remove the barrel pin. The punches worked slicker than snot on a doorknob.

HomeSmith Custom Shop: The Faux Pinto Thread

This 19-3 came to the Shotguncoach Home for Wayward Smiths because it had been stored same side down for too many years. One side looked nice, the other side was covered in freckles and scabs. I was messing around with it at the bench trying to figure out what it wanted to be when I found a...

Very pleased and surprised with an “educational” purchase and teaching the kids.

I'm finding that it's much easier to be a Grandpa than it was to be Dad. Here’s my 16 year old grandson with a model 15…

    Advice on vinyl plank flooring----

I did half my house using the mid level vinyl plank flooring available from Home Depot. 26 years, 2 teenagers, 7 dogs, and 3 grandchildren later there is exactly one nick in it where a bicycle fell over and the tube of the handlebars fell just right to scoop out a nick about 1/4” across. I’ve...

    M10 3"?

I have one 10-8 that started life as a 3" round butt .38…it's currently sporting a stainless cylinder set up for TK Custom moon clips. The gun on top is an original 13, the bottom one is a 64 converted to .357 using a 65 parts kit. All 3 are DAO. Here's a 10-8 that used to be a 4" .38 that...

    TISAS ?

I’ve been inside 3 of their 1911’s - 2 GI clones and one that they call a “Duty”. All of them needed a deep clean at first due to the cosmoline-like preservative that they’re shipped with. All 3 got Wilson spring kits and some light smoothing of the trigger/sear/disconnector surfaces as they...

    TISAS ?

I’ve been very pleased with their 1911 clones. The Glock/Sig amalgamation 9mm that they produce isn’t the style I prefer, but it’s well made and reliable.

    Extractor rod unscrew direction?

Yes….be sure to use empty cases or snap caps to support the ejector star. Larry from midway has some good youtube videos about how to do it.

    Just an old Combat Masterpiece

That is absolutely fantastic! Love the blue towel beauty shots… Moving the insides to the outside and back inside again gets easier with practice. What Fullmetaljacket said about the hammer block is correct…it should be a loose fit. Just check for straight, deburr it a little, and drop...

    M1 Garand reloading 2.0

I have 3…a Springfield, an IHC, and an H&R. Still looking for a good Winchester. The Springfield has been set up as a bedded national match, the others are correct as-issued. I’ll have to check my notes, but IIRC my rifles preferred the H over the I, and my loads are 1 grain higher than the...

    Home Defense Shotguns

A few years ago (ok a decade ago) the AZ department of public safety dumped a ton of shotguns at the place that auctions evidence guns. Wooden stocks, rifle sights, 20” smoothbore cylinder choke barrels. I bought 4 at $140 each. My kids each got one and I kept two for myself. All are stored...

    HomeSmith TrainWreck: Summer of 67

My primary reason for waiting until today to burnish No. 2 is that my drill press is not in an air conditioned space….and I live in Phoenix. Here’s a before picture… And an after … Of course I had to put No. 2 next to No. 1 for a comparison… Which then led to stripping No. 1 down...

Disappointed… but it’s partly on me

Check the channel in the frame where the bolt lives…there’s usually at least one dog hair there. Max likes to contribute.

    HomeSmith TrainWreck: Summer of 67

The 67-1 No. 2 (why do I feel British when I describe it that way?) has been hard scrubbed, medium scrubbed, and light scrubbed with both 7447 maroon and 7448 grey scotchbrite. It’s time to start thinking about 2152hq’s burnishing technique. I wanted to have an idea of what I was getting...
